How smooth is your idle?

I forgot what my stock motor and carbed sounded like. Can someone please refresh my memory on how our rotarys are suppose to idle? I'm now running a stock port GSLSE 13B with a dellorto and headers. Is my idle suppose to be smooth as in no skips or misses or like a cammed boinger. The reason I ask is because i'm playing around with my carbs idle mixture and can actually get my car to sound flat at idle(1000rpm). I mean flat and smooth but the car whole car shakes and shudders.

Thanks, Ed

have you played with timing? i have found that at idle normal 650-750 will have small blips that are normal but direct ignition jeff20b method will solve that, but if idle is at 900-1000 then it idles smooth with no blips the shuddering though pbly shouldnt be occuring. there is an air/fuel and curb idle screws if you adjust theam you can get it to idle about perfect i have took about an hour all you need is lonf apex tip screwdriver. good luck

Idle should be very smooth. Only when you get into bridgeporting and peripheral porting will it start to "lope" like a cammed boinger.

Yeah, I wish I had someones car to compare to. It would make it so much easier. So youre saying it should idle smooth(flat sounding) and steady w/out a miss.

Thanks, Ed

My car is a stockport, but when its warmed up it doesn't miss a single beat. Misses tons when its cold, but when its warmed up, it runs smoother than my moms 91 chevy van. It has about 100,000 less KM on it too.

I threw the dellorto on the 13B and now it goes bduh-bduh-bduh-bduh at idle. Not quite a brap, but close. It smooths out at higher RPM, but my nice smooth idle is gone. I think one of the idle circuits is clogged or there is a vacuum leak on one of the barrels.

I don't know, mine does that too. It has smooth idle on cold startup, but then eventually gets that lopey sound that you describe once it warms up and the idle drops to around 900-1000 rpms.

stock '83:
(southern cali weather)
starts up rough when "cold", burps, sounds like a huge miss, etc.
after a minute of that, the tone cleans up and changes to be more "clear" like if i turned up the treble on an e.q.
Idles and revs suuuuper smooth for the rest of the time. Just had the carb rebuilt, so it better run that smooth! Lovin it, actually. The rebuild fixed my intermittent fuel-cut / fuel-lock problems, by the way. Ah, peace of mind is so nice.
