How to set motor to TDC?

Can someone please tell me how to set a rotary to TDC? I'm tryinng to set initial timing on a motor that has had the crank pulley removed without marking its original position. I forgot which apex L or T on what rotor to watch through the sparl plug hole to get it to Top dead. The motor is an 84 13B SE.

Thanks, Ed

by TDC, you are referring to top dead center, right? If so, that is the location of the piston, so how the f*ck do you do that with a rotary???

pulley posistion

I personally apologize for bkm's rude reply. Bkm, remember we are here to help, not insult. I think you owe 13btoy a personal apology! Has the dist been removed? If not, turn the engine until the rotor is pointing toward leading one one
the dist cap, then put the pulley on with the pointer located at the yellow mark. If
it was removed, line the pulley up with the yellow timing mark and drop the dist back in with the rotor facing toward L-1, it's either going to be right or in what we
call 180 degrees off in a piston motor, if so just rotate it 180 degrees and drop it back in. hopefully you will get it back in. good luck!

once the main pulley bolt has been removed, you will find a notch (this is where the e-shaft key goes. all you have to do is alighn the notch to 9:00 position. 12:00 on the pulley is your leading.

Prior to 81 pulley's are not separable unless you chisel out the weld of some sort on the pulley.

Wackyracer, I followed your instructions on how to get TDC for the leading. The car started but it would barely idle. I turned in the idle screw on my dell all the way just to get the car to idle and when I checked the timing it was way off. Everytime I tried to zero out the timing the car would stall. Anythoughts?

Thanks, Ed

maybe the pulley is not the right one, meaning its mismatch. Then I highly recommend marking ur pulley per YAW or buy one from RB. Then set ur timing per RB catalog or other sources. BTW, Do you have a 12-A or 13-B? Ported?

Your not unplugging your vacuum advance when you are initially setting the timing. Should be a vacuum line going to the distributor, pull that off then set it to TDC. Put it back on and it should run.

I have a 13B stock port. No emissions so no vac advance hose. I took this pulley off my other 13B. Its been marked at 26 L and 16 T. I'm stumped! I'll try putting the original pulley back on.

Thanks, Ed
