How Rice Started

You young guys don't really know how rice started do you? Before honda was so popular the cars of choice for new people to North America was, believe it or not, the Camaro and Trans Am.
If a Camaro or Trans Am could not be aquired then what ever was driven got a nice array of Trans Am stickers on the sides and hoods of the car.
After small cars became a hit it then was off to Canadian Tire or such stores for a couple hundred of feet of pin striping(Manntis is that purple Ford Probe still around Saskatoon?, If it is you'll know which one I'm talking about.)
So you think what you see is funny, If you go back in history there is always the same thing with just a different twist.
I must admit in the 80's I bastardized my 7 with big pink windshield wiper rubbers and fusia pinstriping, wait 10 years and look at your hair and ideas of style and I guarantee you will laugh your *** off.

And as someone mentioned in another thread about this, words get adopted, then adapted and changed to suit the time and place. While I have heard that "ricer" was morphed from the term "rice burner" (derogitory asian reference), it currently refers to those stupid civic punks whose "mods" are all show and no go.

While a little modding, in my opinion, isn't a bad thing, when you see a lowered SUV with ground effects lighting, washer sprayer lights, and a sound system that can deafen people a half mile away, it's just too much.

And civic kids who think that they're fast becasue their cherry bomb adds 15hp (laughs).... THOSE are now our ricers... wannabe racers with more show than go.

Anybody who wants can :flame: me if they want to I know we're all cool here.

The reason rice is so popular now, is because of competition, lowering prices down.

A few years back, you would RARELY see a heavily modified import, and when you did......it was quite expensively done.

For instance......those aluminum wings, used to be about $700. Now, you can pick one up at Pep Boys, or in a magazine ad, for about $95.00.

Everyone and their uncle seems to have a company that manufactures cheap look-a-like bodykits, and knock offs of countless other parts.

It's just really, really cheap nowadays, to pick up all those parts, so, your basic pizza delivery kid, can buy 2-3 big bolt on parts with 1 paycheck.

Funny you should mention.... But he actually put a nice engine in it too. It should be around 13-14's when its up and running. Pretty nice guy. The only ricer who knows his ****.

I went in and was talking to him, i said "damn dude, i blew my engine" he said "oh **** an apex seal go?" i was like..... "yeah.... yeah it did...." he says "**** dude, not much you can do to fix that other than rebuild, or replace. You going to do a turbo setup now? me: "yes.... yes i am..."

So i guess he's not a ricer at all, at least not any more than i am.

Ah, yes, the windshield wiper boots. Did you have the little wings that went on the wiper arm too?

Pink heartbeat pinstripes were the hot ticket back then too. (I'm not even that old and I remember this stuff)

TERM RICE didn't start from pin striping...you got half of it right. RICE started when American Cars would race then the imports started stepping up. Then the American Car owners would call them (imports) "RICE ROCKETS" yes derogatory for Asians as they do eat rice.

Then all the "RICE" mods started comming around. They were actually Good and decent in taste mods.

UNTIL THE AFTERMARKET LOW BUDGET INDUSTRY came around then it just got really CHEEZY I mean cheezy like its not "CRAFT MACRONNI AND CHEEZE" ITS "CRAFT CHEEEEEEEZZZZZZE AND MACRONNI" you like that one huh?

anyways thats where all the CHEAP RICE mods came from ie. pep boys spoiler...CHEAP ! ! I work for pep boys. so i know all the cheap rice mods and the "HOT NEW RICE" mods ie. now its not just lighted nozzle lights...now there " COBRA NOZZLE LIGHTS" or for all you Rebel folks theres the "SKULL NOZZLE LIGHTS"......

ALTEZZA's were the **** when they came around its just COMPANIES such as ARC made whack knock offs.

Man there is nothing Ricey about my '84 GSL (except its Japanise). It is all stock for now, I have a plan to up grade and I am working in that direction, but it seems that every one I know does nothing but give me and my car a hard time thanks to all the f*$%ing civics & CRXs around town. It dosen't help that I live in a V8 (Mustangs, Camaros, Fire Birds) town. Its like the whole rice thing has tainted import sports cars (that are real sports cars).

As for performance upgrades to a civic I don't care if it can break the sound barrer its still a HONDA CIVIC now get over it!!!!

ah I feel much better now

I agree with wipers, but i got to admit that i do like the look of those clear lights in the front on ioTus's car. I used to have ones like that on my '91 but they come stock with them.

The +2" hubcaps are the absolute most ricey thing I have ever seen. They make hubcaps that you can put on your 14" wheels to make them look like 16s.

Hey, it goes back even further than the Camaros and Trans Ams with their stickers--- in the seventies it was custom laquer airbrushed paint jobs, aftermarket velour uphoulstry, pin stripes, hood pins (to make it appear that you had something under the hood worth stealing), a "*******' wagon" logo on the rear window, and fuzzy dice. In the sixties it was dingle *****, chrome bare-foot-shaped gas pedals, "peace"-symbol stickers, and thrush mufflers. In the fifties it was little lights in various areas inside the car (top corners of windshield, under dash, in roof over rear seat--- in case you got lucky), glasspacks, chrome valve-covers, and white-wall tires.
All of this in an effort to cover the fact that the owner had NO *****!

There just seems to be a connection between the two. The drivers of these monstrosities always seem to be either alone or with a girl "friend" who's using them for a ride over to her boyfriend's place.
