hey guys its been a while. i was wondering how to take off my exhuast manifold on my 79 SA22C RX7. i cant seem to get the top nut off closest to the firewall that the manifold bolts to. i cant get a socket in even with a swivel and a wrench wont turn enough to break it free. any suggestions? im building a header for my car and i got the rest of the exhaust off but how the hell do i get to the manifold bolts??? please help!!! thanks! BTW you guys are great help all the time. ive put off the car for a year and a half but im ready to finish it up and just need the damn manifold off!!! UGH!!! LOL

Thanks for the reply. i may just do that if worse comes to worst. i know the header should bolt back on better as it isnt so large and rediculous looking as the can/manifold/piece of **** Mazda bolted up from the factory lol. im building custom header out of 2.25 inch ID pipe that dont collect to one pipe until right before the muffler at the back of the car so i will have dual pipes from motor to rearend pretty much then collect into a 2.5 inch (i believe) ID pipe that goes to a giant brand new can i found in the trunk of one of my blown up cars. it will be 3 piece: header, straight pipe or midpipe, Giant can. lol should sound very nice. Might be a bit loud but oh well. haha. F*ck the cat since its rusted out anyway and soon the car will be dropped so low i doubt a cops gonna take the time to stick his head under there anyway lol. any other ideas on how to get the mani off anyone?

Generally you can get it with a crowfoot & some cussing. Or if you can find a socket with an integral swivel (they're shorter than using a regular socket & snap-in swivel) that also can work.

The only "easy" way is to pull the intake first, but that's a mess.

Thanks alot. i will try the crow bar and lots of cussing first and if i absolutely have to i will go to taking the intake off but i agree taking the intake off could lead to a disaster lol and i dont wanna buy anymore new gaskets thatn i have to lol

+1 I spent hours on the top left nut, finally went to Sears and bought a swivel socket, put on an extension and took the nut off in about 2 seconds.

I'm preparing to start a similar project and I'd rather skip the cussing and hammering part.....can somebody tell me what size the manifold nut is so I can run over to Harbor Freight and p/u a crow's foot and swivel socket.
I've cot an '83 GS 12a

Also, I don't want to be a thread jacker, but .... What block-off plates do I need in order to install a header?

No no nonono... not a crowbar, a crow's foot... a crow's foot socket.
