they are collectables now. im trying to sell mine now for cheap i have a baby on the way so im asking 4000.00 for mine with the motor fully done...holla if interested 813=770-4982. mike

Here in canada, you can't find a 1st gen for much less than $3500. A mint one will go for $5000 and up, depending on the condition. There was once an 85 SE that had an asking price of $15K!!! This is outrageous and I don't know what the car actually went for, but on average, good condition RX-7's in canada for for $4000-$6000.

I think the more this community promotes these great sports cars the more they will be worth. I have seen people here say I wouldnt pay more then $2500.00 for a mint rx-7. I think that sucks when enthusiasts say that. I would pay a lot more then that and the more people that promote higher prices on these cars the more they will be worth. Ill sell you mine for $10,000.00

It's true that pristine examples here sell for upwards of 3k, but reasonably nice ones can still be had for around $2000 to $2500. Reliable beaters are available for as low as $1000 but below that they're typically money pits. Even some of the above-2k examples can rape your bank account if you're not careful.

The mint ones that are typically going for 5k or more (ie: not the once-in-a-lifetime "I-got-5k-for-my- '83GS-because-I-found-a-sucker" scenarios) are the GSL-SEs. Anything with a 12A going for that price (at least for now) had better be gold-plated. The non-SE models in mint condition are typically selling for $3500 or even up to 4k.

The exception would be if you and the seller live in a rural area far from the big city. People in these remote areas often don't know about the price and availability in the metropolis, where competition keeps the prices more reasonable. Either that or they do know, but the $500 to $1000 cost to transport (not to mention the investment of time) eclipses the money saved by buying where the prices are lower.

But 15k for an SE? the last time I saw one actually sell for that was in the summer of 1987--- when the car was only two years old. In due time they will again be worth that much but for now, 7 or 8k seems to be about the maximum that knowledgeable buyers are willing to pay for a pristine SE.

True. But if you were buying stocks and your stockbroker told you that the stock he wanted you to buy from him was actually worth more than what the market said it was, would you pay that broker the higher price? I wouldn't. It may well be true that the stocks actually are about to be worth way more, but the stockbroker's stance represents a conflict-of-interest. Same goes for these cars. We as owners have a vested interest in seeing their value go up. But many of us see price-fixing as dishonest and unethical.

This is understandable since there are 1st gens (even non-SE 1st gens) that are currently worth more than that. When these guys make statements like that it is typically when they are low-balling a seller to see if he's stupid enough to bite.

But the definition of "mint" is critical here. To me and others, "mint" = relatively low miles, new tires, no flaws at all to speak of, definitely no rust anywhere, everything works, nothing feels worn out, original paint, no accident history and the owner can provide most if not all service records to prove that the car was well-kept.

If the car is simply "very nice", ie: clean, no badly-worn uphoulstry, no rust, everything works, but there are minor dings on the body, the tires are more than 25% worn, there's high mileage on the engine, there's been mods done that are irreversible and the stock rims are scuffed--- the "not worth more than $2500" comment definitely applies.

I would pay a lot more then that and the more people that promote higher prices on these cars the more they will be worth. Ill sell you mine for $10,000.00.

If the car in your post is the one you're referring to it is a very nice example. The interior looks pristine, the paint looks new, the body looks flawless and the wheels really set off the whole package. As long as the mods you've mentioned are of the easily and inexpensively reversible variety, and as long as the body work done was a professional job rather than a bondo bucket this car should bring top dollar--- for a non-SE.

I wouldn't be surprised if you have over 10k invested into it. But if you want 10k for it you'd be best off waiting for a few years say, two to five at the outside. This car will definitely be worth 10k soon--- around the same time that showroom-condition SEs are commonly selling for 12 to 15k. I'd rather have one of the pristine SEs that are currently available for 7k, but that's just me.

I'm going to chime in here, as an FC owner (I think this is my first post in the 1st gen section, yay!) I'm currently planning on picking up a GSL-SE that needs a bit of work in the $2k range and fix it up nice. I think of it as an investment.

Certainly a nice car to have but be careful. The purchase price of 2k will be small consolation if the restoration cost gets out of hand and exceeds 10k. It might be a few years before you will have a car that's worth more than what you spent. (but then again, you'd get to enjoy owning the car in the meantime). If you can afford to, it might be better to simply spring for the 7k for one that doesn't need to be restored.

i payed 200$ woot what a steal! its a good body and a bad apex seal it will some be fixed with a striped down motor.

Prices are starting to go up. I think that at 25 years this is what happens to cars as guys who missed them the first time around get a second chance for a car they wanted 25 yrs ago.

Prices for these cars are starting to go up, but only for the ones that are in decent shape. They don't necessarily have to be in showroom condition to qualify, but they do have to be at the very least "twenty-footers."

Junkers aren't going up in value at all and can still be had for under a grand, just as basket-case '67 Mustangs (which if in showroom condition would be worth 20 to 40k) can be had for under 3k.
