How much rust in Gas Tank is bad?

I know, I'm thinking the same thing, any rust in the tank is bad but here's the thing. I got a gsl-se tank to use for my turbo conversion into a gs. The se tank has a little surface rust in a few spots when peeking in through the hole where the pickup tube would usually go. One of the area's is around the inside of that bowl that surrounds the pickup on se models.

Anyways, I took the tank down to get it re-newed or redone whatever they call it when they strip all the rust out and re-coat it. The guy looked in my tank and said I didn't really need the service and I would be wasting my money! I don't know what to think now. Is a little rust ok?

Those guys are prolly used to revemping rust on old classic cars where the rust is really bad. I think you should still do it since it's going to be high performance. You want your fuel system to optimal. BTW, how much is it?

Surface rust is fine. Comes from the tank being empty. Flakes is what you are worried about.

Buy a bunch of fuel filters and put one in when the car starts running crappy. Worked for me.

If I do end up using it which is what I'm leaning towards right now, I will probably replace that filter that sits on the end of the pickup inside the tank, after all, it is 20 years old....hehee

Yeah my neighbor, who's a genius without a hi school degree, was telling me about that. He keeps telling me to bring it over and blow out the lines with his compressor. Total cost: a couple of beers.

If you can keep it to filters and beers, why worry?
