how much power can the GSL-SE LSD rear end handle?

I am building a 12A Turbo FB and I would like to swap in the SE Rear end to get the limited slip diff but I need to make sure it will be durable enough. I'm planning on making over 300hp.

It all depends how you will apply that power. It won't last too long if you try to burn out everyday with sticky tires. But if it is for normal use and even track days, it will work fine.

glad to see this, because soon in my cars future will be an S5 T2 swap with upgrades, and 415hp(350whp)
with the stock SE rear end. I will of course have the T2 tranny and driveshaft.

Mine is holding well with a 325hp V8 / no idea the tourqe rating though. I don't punish it though.

6Yrs ago I was putting 500HP with C16 race gas, E/T Street slicks and 1.30 60 ft times and the stock SE rear lasted a full season. Even when it went it was very uneventful. It just started doing 1 wheel peels.

With my old Streetported SE, I blew U-joints, but never a rear end.

In this car, I will keep using the stock one until it goes..

Run it till it blows then swap something else in.
A stock width mustang 8.8" rear is a pretty easy swap in. Even in stock form they are pretty much strong enough to handle anything you can throw at it froma car as light as a rx7. And built up they can handle pretty mcuh anything.

Eville 140, did you ever get disc brakes on that rear axle? I'd like to see more pictures of your rear-end swap; There's very little info on this type of swap here.

I checked into doing the lincoln mark 7 disk setup like I have on my mustang and I don't think I will be putting them on the rx7. For one I am wanting to run slicks (24*7.5-13's) on a small diameter rim. I'm hoping a 13" rim will fit over the mustang drums. But I am pretty sure nothing short of a 15" would fit over the lincoln disks.
Another thing that woiuld cause problems is the size of the calipers on the ford disks, The mazda rear calipers are tiny, the stock mazda master cylinder seems to work great with the size of the wheel cylinder on the mustang drums. I doubt it would move enough fluid to even make the lincoln caliper move. So that would reguire a after market (or maybe fc) master cylinder and a proportioning valve. And for what I do with the car and the amount I drive it. The cost and extra work just isn't worth it to me.

Here are a few pics of the install

you dont have to shorten it...its 2" longer than stock rx7..., the complete rear end cost is around $200.00 (mustang drum)

its easy to do yourself, especially for someone like you

all you need is a grinder, or plasma cutter and a welder and some measuring tools

wow.. damn.. what kind of 1/4 times do you get with 540rwhp, or 680 for that matter? I'm sure you had to reinforce the chassis, otherwise with sticky's you would twist the car in half.

yea, at what power level should you start worrying about twisting the chassis and other parts?

It depends on a lot of things, but I would rather be too careful. rather than too careless... Thus.. hard launches with any more than 300rwhp IMO should at least have front/rear strut tower bars. I'm almost certain he has a full cage with 540rwhp and ... wow.. 680..

my rustier gsl-se has a 302 v8 mated to the original rear and it's doing just fine. i think it can handle plenty of power with strong axles like that.

More of the same, I've been punishing my -se rear all summer long and it's taking it like a champ. I think it just depends what tires you run and how hard you launch.
