A few basics:
If you have an 81-85 carb good. Remove all the emissions. Take the intake manifold and carb off of the engine. Get a 79 or 80 manifold, they flow better and don't have the damn shutter valve. Plug the coolant passages leading to the manifold (cools intake charge). Rebuild carb. Get a better fuel pump and a regulator. Take the stock air cleaner housing off. Buy racing beat's power pulse cleaner with a K&N or make your own housing for a K&N using stainless steel sheet metal. Re-jet. (havent done this yet)
A few other things you may wanna do is convert to mechanical secondaries and remove the choke depending on how civilized you want the carb to be.
MAKE SURE that your ignition is timed right and exhaust upgrades are done before you fine tune the carb. You may even want to upgrade to direct fire ignition and do the Yaw power ignition timing mod.

Airflow is my life
Sterling posted detailed instructions on mech secondaries (so did 82 transam) . Also Sterling did a nice write up on increasing the accelerator pump volume and shot. Look in the FAQ page at the top of the forum.

speaking of nikki's how much would as excellent condition (only 79K on it) stock nikki and manifold go for? I need to get a price range. If both are in really good condition, never had problems.

I pay $40 max for a used carb. But if its not in need of a rebuild (ie in excellent condition), you might go a little higher. Manifold (79-80) run $35-$50 on ebay.

I would get an 81-85 carb and a 79-80 manifold. The newer carbs are a little better, but the older manifolds flow a little better.
A rebuild isn't really that tough or that expensive but it is very worthwhile.
