The reason is most of the kits you see are mazda factory parts. There isnt a huge abundance so that drives the price too. Also there is a lot to a kit, all the rubber and the metal, that adds up to a lot of parts. Each seal gets a spring, count the seals for each rotor, it adds up quick. Thats not home depot neoprene o-rings either. It sucks I know, but when your done rebuilding you'll say "Damn that was easy!, and now I know exactly what condition my engine is in".

Alas, the days of rotary engines being cheap to build are long gone.
If you autocross your car in just two events, you are eligible for discounted parts through mazdacomp, though.

You'd have to call mazdacomp and ask. I know they are accepting some drag racing as of last year. It's worth autocrossing just to get the discount IMO.

Last I heard, Samurais were not even allowed in autocross.
Nor SUVs, for that matter.

Our local sportscar club DOES have a grass autocross event with a 4WD class, but it's by invitation only.
I'm still a noob, so no invite for me.
