I've got a ford 302 in my 82 with edelbrock intake, crane cam, weber 600fm carb, flowmasters and a t-5 manual tranny. I chose the ford because it only makes the car 150lbs heavier than stock, as opposed to the chevy which can be upwards of 300lbs heavier.

Other than the cost being more, are there any disadvantages of the aluminum block Ford 302?

Unless you plan on pushing over 650hp there are no other disadvantages. Stock 302 blocks are good for about 500hp. They're actually the weak part of the motor. People run 500+hp on stock motors, and split the blocks right in half.

I only read the first post but I disagree with rotary hp not being good value for the $ spent.

I see you have the expensive stuff already right - a weber IDA. Racing beat can make this into a 51mm IDA if you want and then you can talk about porting. I guess you may have emmisions issues in your state but maybe not if you already run an IDA.

Yay intake porting. I love this kind of rowdy mod. Easy big fat pipe in (I like the bridgeport design for a non racer), good carbbie fuel pump and pressure reg, big fat pipe out (exhaust porting and header primaries extending to just after the diff to collect into one).

Get a Haynes manual, an electric porting tool, good housings (near new - no flaked interior chrome plating), 10lb steel flywheel and a front counter weight from an automatic, a pair of matched rotors (you have these already), a 'button' 3 puck clutch and high pressure plate and that will do it apart from actually cutting the ports, buying oil/water/apex seals (may not need new oil seals) and putting it together - just like the Lego set you loved as a kid. Get the side housings skimmed once ported and re-nitrite coated if you can.

Not too pricey I don't think (apart from the rotor housings and apex seals), and should go as well as a V8 with the same $ spent (seriously - unless you get a good 2nd hand deal). It all fits in already, same gearbox and hey it is lighter than a V8 unless you get a more expensive alloy unit.

I know of an N/A 13B rally car (1st gen) in NZ with 400 fuel injected ponies - is that not enough?

Well do the V8 swap if you must just hope it doesn't actually cost more and go slower than the mods I have suggested. You don't need to make your 48IDA a 51mm, and a rotary engine is easy to build.

Go for high energy coils and do the 3 coil (twin leading) mod too if you want high performance.

A good BP 12A can sing at 10,000rpm easily. A V8 would need $$$ spent to do that.

Hmmm, funny.

To the credit of doing the swap though I have seen some wicked V8 Rx-7 race cars but 12PP racers keep up and sound oh so sweet.

Why not get a turbo rotary cheaply (TII 13B) and have a motor running some slightly higher boost, good exhaust and 300hp?
Another .02c

It's good to question your sanity now and then. The important thing is whether you regain it or not.

I suppose it's time I posted this here too...

http://www.corral.net/forums/showthr...5&pagenumber=1 is the link to the thread, but the short version is: cheap reman block, el-cheapo CAST pistons, 480 wheel horsepower, good tuning kept the pistons alive but the raw power killed the block.

has anyone ever heard of using an inboard boat engine
hehehe i was thinking one day when we put the old girl out of commission i would take the engine out, when i granpa baught in in 71 he had the regular 120horse 4Cyl merc changed for the 180Horse 4Cyl mercruiser (the pistons are huge) with custom work done people put them in circle track cars i was told the engine is worth its weight in gold they make custom exhaust and porting along with intake and carbs they make over 250 horse and make sick torque for an inline 4

the engine is in a 71 reinell (spelling)
