How to: Make you're own muffler.

So i started welding up the mid section one yesterday morning. I've actually decided to just fully pack it with stainless steel as oppose to doing the ceramic fiber in there. The back one will see quite a bit of ceramic fiber though.
The front one with everything weighs in at 10.5lb, not the lightest thing, but should last a long time. I'll post up pictures tomorrow.
Anyone know what the RB presilencer weights?

oh she backfires alright lol.
Here's a few videos of it back firing:

Back on topic though, here's some shots of it finished. I'll post a couple of in process pictures later on, they were taken with another camera.

Just for reference, I used this type of stainless steel crubbers to pack the muffler with. Well i placed 4 of them on there, to cover it as much as possible. Then what ever space i had left, I used some coarse stainless steel wool made by bull dog.
The good thing about those scrubbers is that you can just open them open though the center and then just slide them on. Its like dressing a girl ... I know, I know, you guys prefer undressing them though lol.

Yeah, like you would know about undressing a girl :P They got buttons and clasps, it's a total pain. It's more fun to watch them do it, since they know what they're doing.

One a more productive note, I tried sticking the muffler behind another muffler on a buddy's car, and it definatly does a good job at muffling out alot of higher pitch sounds and just keeping that nice little rumble.

If you guys are serious about all this, I can arrange to do something. I'd like to finish up my whole system though and see how it sounds first before leaping into things. I'll also be taking decibel read out inside the car, and also outside at idle, and WOT to do a fair comparison and not just an ear difference.

I did do some some testing today with the wool that i bought and I must say that I'm very impressed. The test involved a torch and trying to burn it. When the flame is directed on the wool, the top layer glows a bit of red and shrinks a tiny bit initially, but doesn't burn up at all. Also another cool thing that we found out is that if you hold the flame there and then take it off and place your hand on there, it a bit warm but nothing that you can't really handle too much. What that means is that it will be able to absorb the sounds, but since it doesn't absorb the heat, it can maintain exhaust gases velocity as it doesn't cool it down. I think that even compared to Stainless Steel its alot better. If I go forward with all this, I think that I might consider Fully packing them with this stuff. Thats how much I trust it right now. If I decide against it, I think it would be because the coarse wool can allow more air to be directed inwards of the muffler and perhaps aiding the noise muffling.

I think I'm going to be doing some back to back dyno testing also. That should be interesting, but we'll see how my budget for this year goes.
This year I'm spending the money on re-doing and refining the suspension, maybe a couple of aero tweeks, and try to extract a bit more power from the NA setup by re-doing the exhaust and intake setup. It should be quite a bit of fun I think and that should be about right to hit my $4k budget that I always target for.

I mean to post up this video earlier on but couldn't find my camera cable. Anyhow, the Steel wool was suppose to be stainless steel wool, but a guess a little company lied to me. I later did test it out with stainless stuff that I have used in the past and is in that muffler, the stainless just glows red, deforms a bit, and discolors with that torch. I don't have a video of that but the point is to show that this ceramic fiber can handle heat very well, and because it doesn't absorb the heat much, it should keep exhaust velocity a bit higher to get it out .

Waffles - hmmm good

Yeah we potters use that in ceramic kilns all the time. Its usually good to
temps greater than 2400 F and it keep its cool on the other side. Thanks
NASA and the space shuttle for that bit o technology.
Yoo coming down to DGRR or Zoomfest this year?

I have plans on going down to DGRR this year. I need to get off my *** and register sometime though. Should be able to do it sometime by the end of the week.

take some steel wool and place a 9V battery on it. LOL! Watch it burn.
that's pretty good for the wool considering propane burns around 1900*

But I even tried concentrating the tip of the flame one one single strand sitting out and still nothing. We had a bit of fun with it needless to say

Well didn't quite get things done today. I had my fuel pump go out on me yesterday, so I had change that today and waiting for a bay at my buddy's shop took a little longer than I had hoped for. Changed the thing in under an hour, must be a new record for me (Mine is inside the tank so it makes it a bit more challenging)
I did however get a few things done; I was able to weld the flanges on the first muffler. all that is left to do for the rear muffler is pretty much pack it and weld the outside shell. then make some fancy tips . I didn't want to fully weld it because i didn't have my camera on me and wanted to show you guys how to do it.
