I've read about how the steel and aluminium expand at different rates and if the engine warms up too quickly (ie by driving) the seals can be damaged.

I have a '79 and I've been letting the temperature needle move until it's entirely in the little coloured bar at the bottom of the gauge.

How long do you let your first gen warm up before driving it?

 

i hope that isnt true.. i sit there for about a 1 minute or 2 and keep it at a costant rate between 1300-2000rpms. then i take off but i keep the rpms under 3k and close to 2k until the temp gauge reaches best operating temperatures.

 

I've never heard anything about that, but it sounds valid. I let it warm up for about a minute then drive, depending on weather. As I understand, letting the car warm up for a long period of time is actually worse, since you are letting the engine run longer in a cooler state, which causes more wear.

 

I will wait until the oil pressure comes up, then I will take off. The original engine died at 220,000 miles. RPMs at kept less than 3,000. Changing the oil and filter everyother month is the key. Checking the OMP is another key. Those damn rubber 90 degree rubber fittings are rubber which become leaky rubber.

The original engine had been over heated several times 9 years prior to its death.

Excessive idling is said to dilute the oil.

 

i try to let it warm up enough to where the choke turns off. granted when it starts to get that cold i start thinking about putting it away for the winter, unless it hasn't snowed yet

 

It depends if I wake up on time . No but really. I have heard the same about Piston motors. They say the blocks cracks. But I assume that It'll happen if you do it often.

I let it run until the E-fan turns on. About 170 degrees water temp.

 

I let it warm up for about five minutes, give or take. That's usually the first line on the guage. The FC doesn't have a temp guage (EEK!) so I let it warm up about two minutes less (on the theory that the 13b warms up faster).
The 323 I warm up till it stops smoking.
The Boo dings at me when it's ready. Sorta like a microwave.

As soon as I get full oil pressure I'm off however, I always keep the engine's rpm blow 3k until it's fully warmed up. I don't like letting the car idle for extended periods of time (especially a cold ROTARY engine) because more carbon deposits build up in the lower rpm ranges due to less heat in the combustion chamber. Some people forget how thermally inefficient our engines are and let the engine idle too long. Then they wonder why their engine is slowly losing compression because all the carbon build-up is making the seals stick.

 

About 4 minutes or so at 2k.

I rev it between 1k-3k until it holds idle on its own and doesn't die which takes about a minute or less if the car is cold.

 

Hell, I just start her up and take off. I just make sure I keep the revs under 4k until the choke kicks off. 200,000 miles and still strong, so I must be doing something right, eh?

 

What do you do the keep the carbon build-up down?

 

On the REPU:

Got 85psi oil pressure regulator.

Start it up, oil pressure goes to 85.

Wait until it goes down to 80, then drive. By then the oil is warming, coolant gauge has moved up, oil temp needle has started to move. Sounds like a good plan to me.

 

yep same here, once it holds an idle i'm off! (no choke, so that takes a minute or so)

 

Heh, yeah I was a wee bit tired yesterday and my mental facalties were not quite up to the task of internet sarcasm : ).

 

I drive it like I stole it. Once she's warmed up, I always drive hard and shift at redline as long as nobody is around. In traffic I can't floor it as much, so I shift lower (maybe 4 or 5K). But really, I drive hard and my car seems to love it. A very good relationship overall.

 

No it wasn't sarcasim because i was being honest It's just not that specific. I said it was off a few. Oh yea I'll need those TPS reports on my desk by noon.
