how to keep an 83 from starting?

My friend just bought an 83 rx. he hasn't driven it yet b/c it needs a battery. we are going to pick it up tomarrow and pull it to my house. I want to play a joke on him and do some thing to it to keep it from starting. It has to be easily reversed so I don't damage his car but I think this would be funny ( you have to know Chris)

Take out the distributor rotor. Or take off the plug wires, easier but more obvious. Taking off the coil wire would be easier (1 wire instead of four) and less noticable. A rotor would be invisible.

or swap the wires, wouldn't that do it? Or would the waste spark screw it up?

Or maybe take the coil wires from the coils, and instead of connecting them to their "input" on the distributor, put them to the "output" where the (leading/trailing) wires should go on the distributor. I don't know the whole timing with rotaries (only had mine for 2 months now), so I don't know if this'll screw something up.

At least it won't be my fault if some idiot uses those ideas and breaks his or his friend's car.

Even if you take the rotor out and try to start it, the coils are still producing sparks. Where are they going? Somebody once suggested that they are arcing internally from the coil to the coil casing. You should never run a coil like this because the insulation will break down and ruin the coil.

I'd simply just remove a wire from the coil (low tension) and let it be. No damage except for starter/battery usage while the poor guy tries to start it.

Take out the fuel pump fuse. If that would be to obvious than cut one blade off the fuse and reinstall it.

Unless the coils can arc to ground somehow they don't do anything if there is not a complete circuit to ground. I don't think you'll hurt anything to take the rotor out of the dizzy. I used to do it all the time to keep my teenage daughter from driving when she was grounded.

yeah taking out the distributor will keep anything from running.. that's what my friend did to keep his late 60's mustang from getting stolen in Flint, he took out the rotor every day after he got back from classes.

When tweaked started this thread he just wanted to play a practical joke on his friend. Removing the rotor from the dizzy is one way to do it and unless it causes him to tear down the engine or sell the car because it won't start I don't think there is any harm.

Oh, I took the keys away from my lovely daughter, but she had made copies at Wal-Mart. She is 20 now and no better than when she was 17. This girl drove the family car through the garage door at age 11, has totaled 2 cars and is a general menace to the driving public. I should have learned my lesson then, I'm thankful I'm no longer financially liable for her. My youngest is now 14 and totally different than her sister, and if she behaves herself she may get to drive an RX-7 when she is 17.

Ya know, I was barely 10 when I started driving motor vehicles capable of going more than 5 mph... i started at 6 with the AMF mower, at 10 I had my Honda 750 running, and I used to practice and go on it...

Remember the Honda 750 is a big bike, 750cc and four bangers...
Still have it and the parts bike that went with it...

Started driving dad's MX-6 around the yard at 13.

Started driving my 1983 GLC Sport at 15.

Got my licence at 16.

and the rest is history...

And I always from 6 had the key to all the cars here... original MAZDA ones too... not BS copies...

Also, my Honda has a toggle switch, no ignition key... so whenever I park I take out the plug wires and cut the fuel line. (there is a valve)

keyless ignition

I used to have a Kawasaki 650 which had a toggle switch, but I only paid $50 for it so I didn't worry about somebody stealing it.

I also learned to drive at a young age, it was a little different growing up in a rural community. My grandpa taught me to drive his 3-on-the-tree '62 F100 when I was 12. I drove tractors and farm equipment at 14. Also at 14 my mother let me drive the family wagon to take my sisters to piano lessons, as long as I stayed off the highway, yeah right, *wink-wink*.

By the time I got my license at 16 I was pretty experienced. The only car I ever wrecked was a '70 Challenger R/T 440 Magnum, wrapping it around a tree when the steering shaft broke on a curve.

I got two Honda 750 motorcycles for free... one was a good frame the other was trashed but had good motor/trans/chain and rear suspension...

I grew up (and still live in, for a few months) in a rural community, not really a "community" more like desert... The closest MAZDA from here is 7 miles away... here everyone has GM or Ford pickup and big GM car - lesabre, bonnie, 98, etc.

I just drove on the dirt road outside my house...

I never wrecked a car... or a bike... closest to wrecking out a car was when some a-hole in a VW Golf cut me off at 40 mph, and I was doing at least 65... screech... I actually got back at him, flooring it to 6000rpm (remember this is a 1983 GLC with 447k miles, somewhat free-revvin) and slamming the brakes to 15mph, he pulled over and I spewed obsenities at him... "THAT'S MY CAR" .

1970 Chall with a 440 Magnum... 375 horses, no waiting... **** I'd love to have one of those... There are a lot of 440's in my yard, and a '72 Chall... but it's a SLANT SIX?!

The easiest way is to unplug the negative coil wires. He'll never notice, and there will be no spark, and no start.
