Can you post pics or at leat give a good description of what you have left of the igniton?

Directly behind the lock cylinder (where you put your key) there should be a device with lots of wires going to it... This is your ignition switch... You should be able to turn it with a screw driver... That's all you need.

The hard part actually isn't the wiring... The hard part is getting the steering wheel unlocked.

Which, if your strong enough, you can do just by turning it as hard as you can. At least, that worked on Subaru Justy.

HOLY ****! Tripple plate clutch... How much power are you making?!?

How much different can it be than any other clutch? I know the worst thing I've EVER attempted to drive was this Old *** Chevy pickup... I think from 1971 or before... Manual tranny cause it had a clutch, but the shifter was on the column... No shift pattern... Didn't have the time to figure it out... If I'd have been in it for a couple minutes I would have probably gotten it.

someone tried to steal mine in the middle of the ontario mills parking lot. the best thing they did was chisel my tumbler, but no change. good ol' car just wouldn't budge for them. however, it was a pain in the *** trying to get a new lock assembly. just go to mazdatrix for that kind of thing... their prices are actually pretty good on lock sets. Anyways, hotwiring would be a pain since the pieces on the ignition switch hold open any of 3 - 5 wire circuits at a time. i just disassembled the unit and put a screwdriver in the ignition switch, but in order to disassemble it, you have to cut the unit off... breakoff bolts are no match for a radiac and a cutoff wheel! muahahahah! and i don't think you're going to be going around stealing cars with loud air tools, huh? i didn't think so.

Same situation when removing the bolts with a hammer and chisel (to unscrew them. It makes a lot of noise and takes at least 15-20 mins. Not a method for a thief, only for the owner who does not want to damage anything. JJJ- You are lucky the thief did not steal your air tools and compressor.

I dont like breaking glass...

I believe someone said they put a metal plate in on the later ones to stop the screwdriver trick...

This works on older chevys and such, but I doubt it will work on newer cars. Take a screwdriver, and touch the + and - contacts on the starter together.

EDIT

Duh, I guess the ignition would have to be in the ON position. Stupid Tanjo.

This is not the "screwdriver trick." I have owned RX-7's since 1981 and locked the key inside a few times over the years. (And it is good security practice to break into your own car, house, and computers.) I just now opened two 1985 RX-7s in about 20 seconds, with a large paperclip. It can be done in under 5 seconds but I'm out of practice. PM me for the details, or else take your interior door panel off and look at the lock mechanism and how it operates. You should be able to see the way to break in by looking at it.

At least three times I have had to break in and start the car without keys. To do it without damage takes about 30 minutes and minimal tools on-hand. Just drop the steering column, work the the ignition lock bolts out with a hammer and chisel (or cut a groove in bolt heads for screwdriver blade), remove the ignition switch, insert small flat blade screwdriver in the slot and turn. Voila, no hotwiring is required. A thief however would want to use faster less noisy methods.

Amazingly enough, I discovered how to hotwire my 7 when troubleshooting starting problems thorugh the HEYNES MANUAL!

Check it out.. go though the "my car won't start" diagnosis thing... at one point they'll say something like "short the red wire to the white wire. If the car starts, the problem is your ignition switch"

Gotta love readily available info

Heres my input from when my ignition switch on the back of the key mechanisim fell apart because the plastic was so old. I turned the key one day and it all shattered and little springs flew everywhere, lol.

Anyway, I just cut the wires off what was left of the little terminals, and started with the white with a red stripe wire because I knew it to be the power wire. Then, I just knew I needed power to the ignition (check lights on the dash will come on), and once I had that, I needed power to turn the starter over (the engine will turn over when you find that wire). If you get the ignition wire, twist it to the power wire, then look for the starter wire, and just touch it to the other two twisted together until the engine starts. After you get the basics, you can work on finding out which wires let you have power to the heat controls and windshield wipers and crap. If you want those, just twist them to the ignition and power wires. After you get where youre going, just untwist everything and make sure the power wire doesnt short out on anything.

I had to drive my silver 85 with just wires for a month and a half. It was annoying. I dont know how to get around the locking column without a drill though, I just used my key because it was my switch that went bad, not the lock.

When my 81 GSL was broken into back in 1991, and 1990 Turbo ][ in 1996, the thief used the typical method that is very common. Slide hammer screwed into the ignition cylinder. Pound it out. insert flathead screwdriver into empty ignition switch and turn it.

Starts car and disables the steering column lock at the same time.

Cool, I'll try that this weekend...there's a nice jet-black FB that's just around the corner that I've had my eye on for a while and I got just the empty spot in my garage to hide it for a while...
