How hard to remove the intake plenum/dynamic air chamber?

Okay, seeing as how this is holiday week for me (no pay vacation) I'm bored so I've decided that since I don't have money to afford anodization or powder coating, I'm going to rattle can paint various parts of my engine. I've pretty much gotten my answer from Trochoid, thank you BTW, but I wanted to ask the rest of you how easy it is to remove the intake plenum/dynamic air chamber from a 13B?

I believe, Trochoid, you said it was 6 bolts that hold that entire thing to the engine? I want to know how much of an ease it is, if any bolts are hidden, if there's a preferred method to remove the bolts, etc etc.

Also, with those multiple mini vacuum lines on the front of it, what's a good way to remove them without tearing them up? Sorry, but this is the best picture that I have. And, this is a very early photo (I have a few other parts cleaned up and painted now) so excuse the mess.

From the looks of it, the DAC isn't on the motor but on top of that plenum piping (or manifold, whichever) and that is bolted onto the rest of the motor?

The biggest thing to do before starting is to take pictures of where the vacuum lines go. I leave all of the vacuum lines in place on the rats nest assembly. I usually remove the T/body first because of the water hose that runs underneath it to the back of the water pump housing. Otherwise you have to disconnect the hose from the back of the water pump housing and it's sort of a pain.

Do you plan on removing the lower intake portion and cleaning the 6 port actuator
sleeves?

I sent you the page # from the FSM for the diagram. That shows the basic configuration. As far as vacuum lines, if they are hard, brittle or breaking, replace them. Disconnect the battery 1st, then the intake duct to the throttle body. That will expose the bolts holding the UIM to the LIM.

While it looks complicated, take it step by step and take pics of each detail. You will need to make a new gasket between the UIM and LIM. Don't forget the center bolt in the UIM, I usually do.

Good point on cleaning the aux ports Doc. Many owners don't notice the slow loss of performance over time as they slowly quit working.

And don't forget the 2 10mm bolts under the DEI chamber near the vent/vac solenoids. They are hard to see unless you are looking for them.

The whole process isn't bad if you take it step by step. Once you have done it once or twice before, you can do the whole thing without any diagrams or anything. There is also a gasket between the UIM and LIM. You may want to either get a new one, a sheet of gasket material to make your own, or maybe some liquid gasket maker. I use the OEM gasket myself.

Good luck.

You don't remove the dynamic chamber from the runners until you remove the UIM from the LIM.

UIM = Upper Intake Manifold
LIM = Lower Intake Manifold

Is that correct?

And, what is DEI?
And, what would the name of that one gasket be called if I were to ask for it?

DEI is the box on top that says RE-EGI. As far as the gasket, make one.

With the Make-A-Gasket stuff, do they come in different grades that I should look at or no?

And, Prof. T, what was that page number you gave me again? I'm not sure if you gave a number that was different than the one I was looking at the other day.

What does DEI stand for? Man, I'm feeling lost with all these abbreviations.

Dynamic Engine Intake.

As far as the gasket goes, When I have separated the 2 sections there have been many times that I reused the original gasket. I do not recommend this for the LIM to engine though. If you make a gasket for the LIM to UIM then either use gasket paper and punch out a new one or use the "Right Stuff". I personally buy the needed gaskets instead of making them.

Well, it was suggested that I make my own, which makes me wonder if I'd be lucky enough to get a pre-made one at Olympus. Probably save some money, too.
