How do you start your 12A?

With or without choke, after it's sat overnight?
Pump the throttle before turning the key?
Hold the throttle while turning the key?
Hold the revs up for a few seconds?

I just got my 12A going in my truck and have only ran it for less than 2 minutes each of the four times I've ran it, because I work on it late at night and it's straight piped.
Each time, I pulled the throttle 3/4 open while cranking, let it run for 20 seconds, then have to hold the throttle 1/2 open for 20 seconds. At this point it's about time to turn it off so I don't have to hear about it in the AM, but was curious how everyone else starts their carbed motor.

pull choke, pump 5 times, crank for ~20 seconds, stop cranking, pump 5-6 times, crank more, if it doesn't start rinse and repeat.

Same here. I turn on the key, pump 2x and crank and then sometimes I have to mess with the gas pedal to keep it going for the first ~30 seconds and then its fine.

No choke, turn the ign. on for a sec then crank her over. Usually fires up, if not, pump once, repeat.

usually in this NC hot moist weather it takes about 5-10 secs of just cranking, if i pump the gas once it'll fire right up without having to wait...when its cold, usually pump a few times and crank, fires right up but have to just rev my engine a bit until it gets warmed up.

I never have to choke, ever. After it sits (extended period), just put the pedal to the floor and start turning it over. When it catches, you know you've got fuel. Take your foot off and crank again.

Overnight, just turn the key, maybe pump the gas a little.

^That's my method. Sometimes she'll start up and then die, but if I'm lucky and I give it a shot of throttle before that I can catch it and she'll keep going. If not second time always gets her running. I haven't used my choke in a couple months now. I just sit holding the pedal to 1000RPM or so until the coolant temp gets up to about 40*. Then off I go.

Cross fingers and toes. Say a little prayer to the rotary gods.

Two slow pumps to the floor and release, crank until it catches, then full choke. Feather the gas until she's stable...then reduce choke to idle at 1500 until it's warmed up.

with a decent motor, it needs 1-2 pumps, and then when it catches, you hold it at 1000rpm for 10-15 seconds.

or you can use the choke

oh, forgot to say that I have to hold the choke open 'til it warms up or it dies. once warm tho, idles like a champ at 500rpm

when mine does run, all it takes is, turn the key on, wait 5 sec., about three pumps, crank and it starts. hold throttle until it runs by itself.

When I went to test drive rusty the choke was so rusted someone had already broke then **** off trying to pull it out.

So it's 57 Chevy style.. well a couple lite taps to pump and crank.. then rev up a bit to warm. Then she's ready to drive. If it's below 50 outside it's really hard to start. Frozen I won't even try it...

When I know I'll be driving her the next day, I set my alarm 15 minutes earlier.

"come on baby.. come on... yea.. you know I love you don't you?"..

and "if you start I won't sell you.. come on baby"..

I usually let the fuel pump have 10 secs or so to fill up the bowls, as it's not currently being driven regularly. Pull the choke, start cranking. If it doesn't take off within about five seconds of turning, one half-throttle pump will usually do the job. I'll let the choke manage itself off the thermal and timer, or if I'm in a hurry to roll, I'll taper the choke manually as the engine heat comes up to keep the idle in a sane range.

When I drive it regularly, it's just climb in, key on, choke out, crank and zoomzoom.

it's only the first time cranking that takes a while every day, not in the summer, it cranks right up without having to use the choke, winter it's bad tho. but afterwards, every crank it's almost instant....... during the winter i do take about 10/15 minutes extra just in case, sometimes i have needed it. but most of the time, its just a safety precaution lol.

No choke, no pumping. I spin it over for about half a second, starts everytime, first start of the day or last.
