Was thinking of buying a junkyard 12a for $100 (aud) for my '70 beetle, and was wondering how to recondition it. Also if there were any books on this subject where would be the best place to look.

you can download any factory service manual and follow the rebuild sections guidlines. before you pull the engine in the junkyard take the exhaust manifold off and verify all 6 apex seals are still intact, it would suck to buy a junk motor.
