How do you know your Cat is shot?

(Catalytic converter, that is...)

I dont have a cat on my 85 SE (full RB exhaust) and emissions testing is coming to Austin. I do have another 85 SE (tech_greek's car) but it barfed coolant and oil thru the cat when he was trying to get it started. SO is this Cat converter shot? Im guessing YES. Would a junkyard cat still be effective??

here in NY we have emission laws but only for 96 - up, before you get all worried see what years your new law applies to and/or see what they test. Here in NY they scan your cars computer for any emmision codes, but if your check engine light is on it's automatic fail for you. however for the older cars 95 - back a cat is required but most people with tuners hollow them out. Good Luck!

A lot of times when they start up emissions they do 96 and newer. Hope you get lucky.

You can not buy a Junkyard Cat, Junkyards can not sale them to the public, they are cut off and sold to a scrapper that can buy them.

A Univeral cat should work just fine, about $100 or get the Bonez high flow that is sold for rx-7's

Maybe the oil and coolant just cleaned out the cat?

Did you rebuild the engine or tear it apart yet?

Austin is starting emissions testing for vehicles 24 years old or newer this year - so I cant avoid it any more. 96 and older get the sniffer test and without a cat Im sure it wont pass. There are waivers if it costs more than 300$ to fix and im sure I can get an estimate of well over that for a mazda cat, but I dont want to screw with getting pulled over for a failed inspection while Im trying to get a waiver (my 7 is a daily driver). 100$ isnt too bad for the bonez cat so I will probably bite the bullet and get one and just use it for inspection days. Its interesting that they cant re-sell a cat...

I'll get even by running the exhaust straight out of the header when I am exempt from emissions testing in 3 more years!

thanks!

No rebuild on your car yet , Tech but your whole suspension has made its way to my car with excellent results. It will probably be fall by the time I can get the motor out of the "parts car" and rebuild it. I told my son this can be his car when he can drive - he's 2 1/2 now!

the bonez is
Bönez Performance Main Converter - 86-91
Price: $250.00

Or a Bonez with 2.5 in and out - $200

Well crap - It just gets better and better doesnt it? ;-)

Im also considering getting another inspection before the new laws go into place Sept 1 - so I can get away with it until next september instead of expiring in March. That or maybe I should just pick up a nice 81 and garage my SE's until 2009!!

Go ahead and do the inspection so you have another year, And then just look for a used bonez in the for sale section, Bolt it in for the test and then take it back out and store it till the next test.

the bullet would proably put a hole in it. Kinda common sence don't you think? If it smells like sulfer(rotten eggs) or your HC's are too high at the cruise emmissions test.

You can tell it's shot when it stopped breathing from a
night of drinking, smokin, snorting, and whoring.

But it died happy.
