Question How do I pull a Stripped Bolt?

I am trying to pull out my tranny, and the person who owned it before me has stripped the five sides of one of the bolts off. The bolt itself is increadibly tight. So far, I have tried several wrenches and multiple sockets, to no avail. The bolt is on the top right hand side, so there is no room to hammer a wrench or socket on. I thought about drilling it out, but that is a risky manuver, and because of its location I can't even get a drill near it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Can you grind a slot into the top and then use a very large screwdriver?

OR buy a crappy socket and spot weld it to the bolt, I've had to do that a few times when I didn't have enough clearance to get in there with an extractor.

Good luck!

soak it with penetrating fluid first and use some heat if you can get it to the bolt.

Wow, thanks for the quick response! However, the screwdriver idea won't work for this application because the bolt is too tight, and there is not enough clearance to even get a screwdriver (even a stubby) in there. The welding of a socket to the bolt is a great idea, and I am sure it would work, but I don't have a welder, let alone how to use one.... Any other ideas?

It's a penetrating oil, the only one I use.

PB blaster is the only stuff to use. There are several styles of special wrenches that work with a wide range of bolts. They usually have moving parts that lock onto the bolt head and only increase pressure as you strain to loosen the sucker. I think Craftsman sells one, but there are several varieties. These have saved my butt on numerous occasions. They are typically advertised as working with stripped bolts and screws. I wish I could be more specific in my description, but I'm sure you could find one without too much trouble.

Since tranny bolts are 14mm, use 9/16 or 13mm. Whack the hell out of it with a hammer
