Any thoughts or suggestions. here is the situation. Apparently the tank has either a hole or rust spot on the top if t, it does not actually have a leak per say, but I rencetly filled it completely and it kinda overflows and has the outside of the tank wet. Problem being that I had taken it to ge tthe read wheel wells welded and they wouldnt do it cause of this. What is involved in chancgin the tank, should I look at junk yard? How much any idea? Inspection didnt have a problem with it, but I do wanna fix it.

take it to a radiator shop. they can repair, flush, and re-line it for 70-100 bucks.

 

Should proably take it off and replace it with one that you KNOW is good. They are NOT very hard to do if you have done it before, Run it almost out of gas, and drain the rest out of the plug on the bottom of the tank.

Then open the gas filler hole and take off the bolts. Disconnect the fuel lines from up above the rear axle. Disconnect the plastic cover behind the driverside wheel well and disconnect the wire connector from the sender unit for the gas gauge on the tank. Now the easy part, disconnect the two bolts near up behind the bumper that hold the two straps on the tank.

DON'T take off the bolts on the side by the axle, no need. The straps will bend low enough to just pull out the tank out easily. YOu are done, put in the new tank in reverse order. Enjoy

well I just recently pulled my tank off because of rust. I couldn't find a radiator shop that would touch it so I got some stuff called Por-15. I was REALLY pleased with the results. It will re-line your tank and fill any holes and pits. And the price was just right. 1qt. will do a 30 gallon tank and it was only $20.00. Here is the link. Nearly all of the junkyards around here punch holes in their gas tanks, because they're required to drain them and are usually in a rush.

I'd call around, I did eventually find a junkyard that doesn't punch holes in their tanks, but that was after I'd bought mine, took it to a rad shop, spent 4 hours grinding rust off of it and painting it, and threw her in my car.

If it's something that can be repaired for <$100 I would recommend doing so, the tanks I found in the yeard were in almost as bad shape as the one I was replacing

 

Are you sure the fuel wasn't just leaking out of the plastic thingy on the top of the tank? It is just a press-fit into a rubber gasket and could seep a bit if the tank was really full.

There are two gaskets and two hoses where the leak could come from. There is a rubber gasket for the sending unit which I would suspect first. Then there is the filler hose and the overflow hose. Lastly there is a cork gasket at the very top of the tank for the fuel lines. You're gonna hafta drop the tank to check any one of these.
