How do I change the...

tiny little lightbulbs that light up my A/C controls on my 84? I can't figure out how to get 'em out... Maybe it's 'cause I was doing it in the dark, I don't know. Any help is appreciated!

First, you have to remove the shift boot console by pulling up at the rearmost edge, then this will reveal 2x Cross-head screws that hold the bottom of the center console in place. Remove these, and then pull outward on each of the Fan Control and Hot/Cold Control *****. You'll find 2x14mm nuts under here that thread onto each shaft - remove these along with the washers, and then pull outward on the top and bottom of the center console VERY CAREFULLY. As old as these cars are, the plastic has become very brittle and will crack if you look at it funny...

You'll find that there are 2 wired twist connectors at the top (and one at the bottom for your ashtray lighting) that can be turned about 45 deg and pulled out to reveal the bulbs. These bulbs can be found at your local auto parts house, and are about $0.75 each or so.

Reassemble in reverse order. HTH,

Good info Longduck! I'll be doing that myself shortly now that I know how simple it is.

LongDuck,

I already had the interior stuff out. How do you actually get the bulb out of the housing, or does it unplug a bit of the wiring and come out like that? I couldn't get the bulb out of the socket.

I couldnt get the tiny bulbs out either though I am sure they come out as I saw that one of mine was missing. I just snagged an assembly (bulb, wire and plug) form the junkyard and just replaced it that way. Of course, mine is 83 so some stuff is different. Maybe a pic of which one you are talking about?

You talking about the lights that go to the ***** and light up the I, II, III, III and red/blue dials, or are you talking about the lights that go behind the Vent, Bi-Level, Foot, Heat, Defrost, Recycle, and A/C buttons? (Buttons on GSL/GSL-SE only. GS and S had a slider.)

The **** lights should pull from the connector. They're a wedge base. Wiggle it out a bit.

The Button lights are on top. Little grey ***** removed with a screwdriver. Good luck finding them. I believe you need to remove the bulb from the grey plastic ****.

Maybe it's because I was doing it in the dark and just couldn't figure it out. Oh well.

Man, I was just so happy to be able to get it running and take it for a short drive last night... So I got ambitious and the little light bulb kicked my ***.
