How Am I Supposed To Put My Car Back Together?? And Should I Trust A Junk Motor??

Ok, IF I EVER HAVE MONEY, I know it wont be lots. Im thinking Ill pick up a "good running" engine from a junk yard that will fit, and swap into my 83. If I buy one of these engines from a junk yard (with a warranty) should I actually trust them that its a "good running" engine? Also, when I bought the car, the guy before me had pulled most of the stuff, so I dont have 95% of the bolts and what not to put the dang thig together with...Any suggestions on what I should do about that?

~T.J.

PS - The title was supposed to be "junk yard motor"

If its just carbon locked, just pull it apart and check everything. Sometimes you can clean it up and put it back together for just the price of the soft seals.

I don't see why you couldn't trust a junked motor. Hell, i pulled my car from a junyard... it has issues, but it runs.

junkyards can be hit or miss. i got one, and after taking my time, being careful and all.... go to crank 'er up and the f***ers weeping oil through every part of the housings! called up the junkyard, they sent another right away and it still runs like a top! i've probably put about 10000 HARD miles on it, no complaints at all.
the good: got a great motor(eventually), got to pick and choose the best accessories(carb, alt, waterpump) from the 3
the bad: pull motor, install motor, pull motor, install motor... first motor i've ever swapped, awwww man! i gotta take that damn flywheel off again?!?!
the ugly: WTF was i thinking getting a starter from pep boy's?(replaced it 5 times in one week, loooove the lifetime warranty), the instant hole in the ozone layer over my house when we realized the a/c was still charged after 10 years

Id freaking loose my mind if I went back to 5kb/sec!

15000000 bytes received successfully. (257.44 KBps) (00:00:59).

Junk motors are a crap shoot, you may get one that last through the warranty period, you may not. A buddy of mine bought one a LONG time ago when FB's weren't very old. I think he got a 83 motor with 60k on it, or was told it was 60k, the motor barely made it 30k... Good luck man...

Haha...He said "cute", lol.

Anyway, I think I found a junk car that I can pull what I want off of. Its in a local junk yard, and its an 83 GSL, just like mine, only black. It runs too! Well, at least the previous owner said it did before someone grabbed the distributor out of it before it was taken to the yard. I think im gonna try and take my distributor down there, drop it in and see if it will start. If it does, the whole things gonna come home with me . He just got it in a few days ago, and he doesnt have the paper work on it yet, so its not even in the yard yet. I have first bid on it too . All I need is an engine, starter, bolts for tranny, bolts for starter, bolts for engine, two fenders for the -SE, front apron for the -SE, door for the -SE, misc interior stuff, etc...Basically it will go to good use .
