Hot in Feb, and she smokes!

Rather new here, just into the first year of my fascination with this rotary engine. 84 GS, streetport 12A from atkins rotary(about 5000 miles on it), still smogged, hi flo cat, 2.5in custom exhaust, flowmaster. On the intake side im stock aside from the K&N / Bonez intake, I have not yet rejetted as the car is running strong and does not appear to be burning too lean. I did recently notice my temp gauge climbing past the therm symbol. I'm thinking thermostat? Oil pressure gauge is fubar, with my past hobby cars(mostly alfas) I've trusted my ears and the seat of my pants as to the health of the thing but this rotary has had me worrying. OMP MUST be working as i burn approx 1qt every 1000 or so, lots smoke on a cold start-up with just a slight leak on the driveway. Do these thermostats have a tendency to stick in cold weather? Are Mazda's gauges (well obviously not detailed) prone to inaccuracy? Thanks for any advice...Im beginning to really dig the rotary community...(ive never gone so fast sans pistons; what a beautifully simple concept!)

Start with the thermostat and flush the radiator while you are at it. Everything including coolant will cost you about 25 bux.

Your oil consumption sounds kind of high, I would watch it carefully and if it gets worse or smokes when shifting or for an excessive amount of time after you start it you should take it back to atkins. Also what color is the smoke?

You can check the OMP output to put your worries to rest. 1qt per 1000mi is right on the money per Mazda. So your water temp is going about halfway? Thats a little high, specially in this weather. Whats the condition of the cooling system? Age/condition of the coolant, radiator, fan, tstat? Is there any correlation of the high temps to mph? Does it get hot all the time? Or only highway driving? Around town driving?

BANNANAMAN
Had a full flush done by our longtime vw/triumph/bmw/now mazda rotary man here prior to dropping in the new engine. my startup smoke is the normal (i think) fairly white little blue mix, once the car is up to temp no smoke at all. Radiator is the original, of course hoses etc were replaced when the new 12a went in. The hot is an all the time, doesnt matter if it is highway or city. The temp is not correlated to rpms, car is smooth from about 1000 to 8000 Soon as shes back from paint I will be replacing the thermostat....
