Horspower gain estimation of my "budget race exhaust" idea?

Okay, for racing purposes, because I'm a broke SOB right now, lol, I was thinking about just running a mandral bent pipe off each exhaust port, curving down, and exiting about 15-20 inches from the port, at a downward angle towards the back of the engine bay, just far enough to get the hot exhaust gasses away from the engine bay, never connecting the two pipes. Keep the piping diameter the same as stock, or only slightly larger, to maximize exhaust velocity and flow.

This would be rediculously loud i realise, and only used while drag racing, because its just begging for hearing loss/cops giving tickets on the street.

Anyways, power expectations? Would it likely be better than like a racing beat exhaust power wise? Any better ideas keeping the total cost under $30? lol

If you dont make the piping an excessive diameter, wont it not harm the low end?

hmm for some reason i don't think so but im no expert by any means.. my thoguhs are that it has more to do with overall length of the exhaust and were/if they collect i know if you run full exhuast str8 back without them collecting you loose low end aswell.. at least im pretty sure of that.

The one thing I loved with my 83 is, everyone at school plugged there ears as I started her with the choke at 2500.

Obviously with streight exhaust. But you will lose a lot of power, and you notice the poer loss. I did and it feels like something is wrong with car.

At least put a resonator on there somewhere, otherwise sounds like a great idea!

Good luck!

Something tells me as long as you dont oversize the pipes you should only gain power. Top fuel dragsters dont have mufflers, they have completely open, and very short exhaust... no race car I've ever seen that didnt have to abide by noise regulations used a muffler.
