Horns, filters and fun

I used to have a stock Mikuni air cleaner. It fit nicely (See Fig. A). Unfortunately, it had an off-car accident*, which rendered the filter and the assembly useless. I went ahead and got a new racing filter kit from from K&N. Unfortunately, I was stupid and didn't measure to see if it would clear the alternator. Notable size conflicts ensued (Fig. B).

*Don't ask.

So I saw that I have 2 options: Buy a new one or do a hackjob on the brackets and modify the filter to fit. The former sucks, because the kits are really expensive. The latter wouldn't be too hard and would certainly save money, but I also got to thinking about the whole concept in the first place. Isn't that big *** plate on the top (Fig. C) just a restriction? I'm not an aeronautical engineer, but the thing doesn't strike me as beneficial to airflow.

I've seen a number of foam applications, (Uni filters for one), which looked like a good idea. However, I've never seen anything that would be too happy on a Mikuni. So the question is, would it be worth it to do something like spot a wire frame onto a bracket, then stretch a proper piece of foam across it (Fig. D)? Is there a better solution? After spending a small fortune rebuilding and porting my engine, it seems like it'd be a waste to lose any potential power because of a little filter. Thoughts? Ideas?

Not cracking wise or anything but I just installed my mikuni and I dont have access to a filter right now so I asked my daughter for a pair of panty hose and I used some tie wire.... looks just like the ones on ebay and it was a crap load cheaper than 35$.... I know I get ghetto sometimes... but thats how it is when you come from the hood.

*NOTE temporary solution

Unfortunately, these tend to be even more restrictive than the K&N ovals. They throw off the air flow pattern that the stacks are designed for.

Rusty, bite the bullet and order the right size, then eBay the bigger one. If you don't have the old one to take measurement from, I can measure mine. I'm not a big fan of the foam filters either.

I have an OER 45 and the filter would not clear the alternator as well, just by looking at it. so I bought some socks from I believe Pierce Manifolds (google it) for a weber 45 DCOE. Well, I didnt have the same velocity stack screws as the weber, so I fit them over the stacks that I left on. I will load a pic when I get home

My IDA's run like crap using (1) socks and the (2) air horn cap (wire mesh with a piece of foam).

Since I don't feel like taking my Mikuni apart, if the gasket shown with part #: Z70/156, then that's the filter and holder that will fit the Mikuni with the 1 piece wrap around intake manifold. It looks to be the same one I have.

In agreement with wacky, I've looked around for the relocation brackets before, but I can't seem to find any. They were made by Pineapple, right?

I remember a guy at my tuning shop say something about making one using the AC compressor mount, but I and not entirely sure how to go about doing that

They are in the process of redesigning the alternator bracket.

If you've got some dough, Guru Racing has a nice aluminum piece.

So, it's been almost a year, but I still have not found a solution. Pineapple still doesn't have a bracket, I can't even find Guru Racing, I have no idea which K&N filter fits properly, and those individual foam filters would annihilate the air flow of the horns. I haven't driven the car much (I currently have a couple of shop rags zip-tied to the horns), but it's racing season and I really need a way to get an air filter on this bitch.

Any suggestions or known acceptable filters/brackets (preferably with a link to said items)?

chop the outside edge of the airhorns (like the original) so you can use a DCOE style or something similar air cleaner assembly.

They're already chopped. My old air filter required it. Though aren't the DCOE horns further apart than the Solex/Mikuni? Or is that just the IDA's? One way or another, I don't really know what actual filter to get. I know there are plenty of people around here who run Mikuni's, what are they using?

I'd deform the filter if necessary to squeeze in around the alt. Not much rocket science to it.

I'm tellin ya, go with the pod foam filters like I did if you cannot find anything. I doubt you could even feel the difference between the set up I had and a generic filter set-up.
