Homebrew header and Sterling ??'s. Newbie already searched

Hey guys and gals thanks for reading.

Two major questions here. I just got an 85 gsl with a 12a btw.

First, an old bud found out I was getting the rx7 and immediately called and asked if I wanted a header that’s been sitting in his garage for like ten years. It’s homemade and doesn’t have a collector is all I know. I haven’t even seen it so this whole question may be premature. But I hear that rotaries like long primaries and I’m thinking I would like to try and build this header into a replicate the RB road race exhaust with a little glasspack on each primary tube. It’s really just something I could mess around with and get some good practice with the TIG.

Does anybody know where to find a good mini-muffler that can take the heat of the rotary exhaust? I’ve found a few that might work, but they’re all either $100 bucks apiece or just undersized (and louvered >:-< ) glasspacks that I figured would blow out pretty fast. I’m aiming to uncork the motor just a little and get rid of all the smog junk that probably stopped working decades ago anyway. (no smog testing in my county BTW) And I don’t mind a little loud, but really don’t want it to sound absolutely obnoxious. I’m thinking with the presilencers in the primary tubes, 2-1/2 inches from the collector back, a long perforated core glasspack in the midpipe, and a borla straight through turbo muffler at the end it would give it a little power boost and still be bearable for weekend driving.

And speaking of power boosts, I’ve read all these posts about how frickin awesome the Sterling carbs are (and I’ve read everthing on his website as well), but nobody (including sterling’s website) mentions how much a sterling carb costs. Or whether its something where he rebuilds your carb for you. I mean if the carb costs less than my car I need to order one today, or at least find out what other mods I need to do before ordering one (exhaust, etc). Right now the extra reliability would be great, and the extra flow and power are always appreciated.

So anyway, let me know what you think. And Sterling, if you read this and would rather go through the pricing and stuff privately just PM me.

Welcome to the rotary world....

First thing, stay away from glasspaks! You'll burn them out very quickly, and just end up buying something more expensive the second time around. I understand Borla has a nice little straight through that you can pick up on ebay for about $60.

I'm positive Sterling posts his prices on his website. Don't quote me but I'm pretty sure on the low end (rebuild of your carb) he's less than $200 and on the high end his most expensive is less than $800.

I don't have a Sterling, but if I had the money I would definitely get one! As far as the Home-built header goes....I guess if you don't mind practicing your mad welding skills....what the hell....go for it. Otherwise there's always Racing Beat.

Holy crap the Sterling is pretty damn affordable! Especially if you take off the core charge. You're right it is on the website. I read most of it already, must have lost it in that pile of information. That is DEFINITELY on my wish list now.

The mufflers not so lucky. At least on the Borla site. Cheapest muffler there was about 150, and i didn't notice any smaller than 2-1/2 inches so not much good for the primaries.

The racing beat exhaust is pretty sweet, but it's a little on the loud side and man it hangs so low i'd knock it of coming up my driveway. And I'd like to be able to experiment a little, sticking a resonator here and there to get the sound I'm looking for, and hacking up that nice an exhaust seems like a real shame.

I guess if I wanted to go really cheap I could find some perforated 2" pipe, 4" solid pipe, and maybe stainless steel wool (?????--to handle the heat?) and fab one up myself, but wow that's some serious work.

Cherry bomb has perf core glasspacks for around 40 bucks that might work fine, I'm just wondering how well they would hold up.

Oh, and mad welding skills? Not by a long shot but something I've been meaning to master for a while.

Think about it this way... Rotaries shoot fire when they feel like it, fire melts fiberglass...

So yeah, glasspacks probably won't last long on these cars.

Exhaust:

a. You will get what you pay for.
b. For a presilencer, you pretty much have two main options: Racing Beat, or search for threads by dj55b and learn how to make your own. This might be a very good option for you, since you mentioned welding practice.
c. The RB exhaust is not loud (street version). In fact, in my opinion, it is too quiet.

Sterling Carb:

a. Kicks ***
b. Does everything it is supposed to
c. Can involve a long wait time
d. Well worth the wait

WARNING ON THE STERLING CARB; Ive now been waiting 9 MONTHS for my sterling carb. I've had numerous emails with him and keep getting promises on it being done soon but still no carb. If you look a few posts above this, you will see my post about getting my dellorto rebuilt just so I can have a running car. Yea it might kick *** but you have to get it from him first. I'm gonna email again and see what the story is now. He has nothing but good internet press and he's assured me I'll get it but this is way beyond rediculous. I'll post the emails for anyone who doesn't believe me if that's what it comes to.

The one I heard may have been a race version. It was way back in the day of autocrossing piston engined cars so I probably wouldn't have known the difference.

Rotary-Works does make an affordable header as well, I have not seen any reviews yet but it looks promising:

As well for a straight through muffler I have found Vibrant Performance makes what appears to be a very solid muffler for about $125, I don't think I know of anyone off hand who has used a Vibrant Muffler during my searches on exhaust setups and such but it does look like a good product, if anyone knows of what they pack their mufflers with and could inform that would be awesome.
Vibrant as well makes resonators both bottle type and the canister "ultraquiet" resonators.
