Question Holy yellow crap on the floats!

Hi All,

I just decided to rip my carb apart again and see if I could figure out what was going on. What I found on the floats is making me shake my head. These floats were black and solid when I put them in, now the have a yellow color and one is almost white with some sort of garbage on it. Has anyone out there seen this before? This is new one on me.

Thanks

Are you adding anything to your fuel?

Nope, just regular gas. That's the weird part. I could understand this if there was something in the fuel, but the car has been locked in the garage for months now.

There's the possible root of your problem, either the gas has gone varnishy, or the fuel pickup tube has rusted internally. There is a little horizontal section of the metal fuel pickup tube inside the tank that likes to rust if the car sits. Mine was like that from sitting a long time, and eventually I had to replace the tank as the damn tube kept getting plugged up with rust. I used an old bass guitar string chucked in my drill to roto-rooter the thing out, and then it would be okay for a month or so. Check and see if there is any rusty crud in your fuel filter as an indication.

I will check that out tomorrow. Sounds like a likely culprit and I just happen to have a couple of bass strings here myself!

An "A" string works good. Make a little 90 degree bend at the end so the thing scrapes out the inside of the tube.

Ya know what! That A string sang a great tune for me!

I actually tried what you said and while it wasn't the cause, it did remove some crap from the line.

Thanks for the suggestion!
