holley carb and other carb suggestions needed

my dad just recently pulled out a holley 650 cfm with two injectors carb out of the garage and was wondering if thats too much for my 7 to handle, but i hear that you lose low end torque and power and dumps way to much fuel in, so just wondering if it will work on my car, and also what other carbs have you guys used

search kid! I've ran Holley's , Webers and a Dellorto. By far my favorite is the Nikki carb! Also we need more info( engine, porting, goals)

I am thinking we are gonna need a little more info about your car. 12a or 13b? Ported or not etc. I think a stock 12a does pretty good on a 465 cfm holley, maybe 600 on a streetport. Also if it just a generic holley, you might be facing a few more obstacles.

If your car has injectors...is it still a carburetor??? Yeah...we are gonna need some more info...lol. Common carbs for these cars include holley, dellorto, mikuni, and weber (dcoe and ida)

Give some info about your car that you are considering for this carb swap and we might be able to help.

ok for starters i am way to lazy to search cause i had a long day heh but i got a 82 12a engine with 70k miles all stock, currently running the nikki four barrel just want to switch i guess, my goal is just to have balanced all the way, from low end power to high end

wtf does that even mean? a carb doesn't have injectors. and no a 650cfm will be way too big. RB holley for stock port is 465cfm. sell it and use the money for something that will work.

Looks like a throttle body from a Chevy TBI system. I thought about using one of those back when I had a Camden blower. The one from the 454SS actually flows pretty well.

that's a TBI not a carb. u'll need an ecu to run it.

but being a 650 cfm its too much anyways, and i did say it was trottle body, sorry if i got that confused with being a complete carb.....my bad....

so what type of carb that will give balance low and high end power, without so much fussin with it, cause i hear your always messing and changing the holley carbs.....but what are you suggestions

leave the carb you have and look at getting exhaust first.

whats wrong with my exhaust hehe.....me and my dad are planning on custimizing that ourselves cause we already got all the materials-2.5 inch steel pipe, and muffler and everything else- but looking at the carb as of right now

There is only one carb that doesn't require a lot of time and effort to get it tuned right: the factory one. Other than that, the best you could do is probably fork out the dough for a Racing Beat Holley kit, since they set it up so that the tune should be fairly close.

By the way, 2.5" exhaust with a "muffler", as in singular? I hope you like a lot of loud. Are you building your own header, too?

While i prefer edelbrock over a holley, percent seven is right with his recommendation based on the fact that if you get the entire kit you also end up with a functioning omp rather than premixing or fabricating something. As for the tune, the holley kit would be "safely rich" just like any holley and would work right out of the box.

yea i got a cousin who has the pipe bender for the header and another friend of mine has a laser cutter for the flange peices, going to pipe of the header to silencer or two...not sure yet then probably what i want to go to is probably a borla muffler and extend more pipe off of that, for carburuetor i have the stock but mine is behind fixing for me...heh as of right now to start my car i have to have the peddle all the way to the floor to open up the butterflies and just becomes a pain...so yea from that i also get aton of smoke coming out of my exhaust

another thing is i need to hold the choke out like an inch to get power and make it run perfectly even when its warmed up to temp

The choke should stay out once you pull it till it is warmed up and than it should go back in on its own.

Kyle,

You're really going to want to stick with a Nikki carb. Anything else is going to be a serious project to get installed and working properly.

The most likely reason that the car runs better with the choke out, even when warm, is because the jets are clogged. Closing the choke reduces the air coming in and increases the fuel, which will make up a little bit for the clogged jets.

You're going to have to rebuild a carb. Either the one you have, or grab a junkyard carb and rebuild that one while you drive the other one. I'm sure that you and your dad could handle this in a weekend.


Also, remember what I told you about the exhaust. You'll need very heavy gauge tubing, and special pre-silencers and muffler (Borla is actually a good choice). 95% of what's out there will not last on a rotary because the exhaust gasses are way hotter than a piston engine.

By the way guys, this is a '79 with a later engine that was recently installed...
