High Rev....then dies

I did search for this topic and i just kept finding things about 2nd gens but anyways, i got an 85 GSLSE that starts right up revs to 4k-5k then dies. if i hit the thottle i can keep it running but it sounds like a hellava misfire. i just put a new motor in the car today since the old one was not making power and had low compression. i've been messing with the distrubtor and found a spot were its running some what well. i haven't touched the idle screws or anything with the exception of the thottle cable but i put that back the best i could. i swapped over all intake parts and ignition part but put new plugs in it. any help?

I'm not an SE guy, but I would be suspicious of a sensor for the ECU... like the TPS.

I would first look for a major vacuum leak that could explain the sudden acceleration to 4 or 5 thousand rpm's with a cold engine getting all that raw fuel. However as for the stalling...maybe it has to do with the computer maintaining idle. I doubt that the two problems are related. Get it to idle then work on the start up.

i'll keep looking for a vacuum leak. but today i checked compression and found it around 100psi and even on each pulse. checked the mass air flow and found all ohmed out with in range. i've looked at every vacuum line and they all are hooked up. going to start working on the ignition side to try to see if i have the timing marks off and to make sure my coil is putting out enough juice. the only part i don't under stand is, when i was messing with it today i had the maf plugged half way by accident and the car started to idle around 900rpm but sounded like a dead miss on one of the rotors. i had e1 and fc plugged in but tha and vs where not plugged in....riddle me that one.

vacuum leak......where the two intake gaskets meet. found it with a smoke machine. now it sounds like its running on 5 pulses which makes no sense.
