high idle, backfiring, wont rev past 5k

Title pretty much says it all. Wanted to check if anyone here had an idea on what it could be before I take it to a 1st gen specialist. But to be more in depth, The idle stays at 1500 rpm bounces up to 1800 or so. Makes kind of a bduurp....bduurp... bduurp. when you put it in first, nail the gas and let it rev up it completely loses all power between 4800 and 5000 rpm , no matter how much you push the gas. After letting off it backfires 90% of the time. The Idle screw is set at its absolute lowest, and I have set the timing and A:F ratio as best I could, but none of them seem to make much of a difference. (Advancing the timing calms the idle down A LOT but the thing backfires like crazy just driving normally)

When you set the timing, did you do it by ear or use a timing light? Reason I ask is because it sounds to me like the first thing you should do is verify that you have spark on your leading ignition....

Otherwise, you might have a mouse in your carb....
