Hey... where did my 4th gear go?

I'm afraid I don't know much about transmissions, it's one of the last things on the car that I have not worked on yet..so I thought I would throw this one out there to see if anyone could give me some advice on how to proceed.

I hopped into the car (84 GSL-SE) and went on the highway. Everything was fine, I shifted up to fifth and kept it there, no worries. I didn't shift at all until I reached the exit of my destination. I stopped, waited for the light and I took off again. FIrst was fine, second, third, but when I tried to put it in fourth gear it wouldn't go. It was like fourth gear wasn't even there. I messed with it a little bit on the way home... first through third worked fine. I could also shift into fifth without any problems, it just would not go into fourth. If I was standing still with the clutch in it would go into gear, but obviously this doesn't help when I'm not moving. Also if I double clutched it, I could force it into 4th with a littel bit of happy grinding. Once in, it worked fine.

So...new transmission time? Or something else?

Syncros are out. Either get real good at double clutching/rev matching or rebuild/replace.

yeah, and if you do get a 12a tranny I think you will also need the speedometer gear from the SE tranny because the rear ends have different gearing than the 12a cars.

If you get a 12a tranny, you need to swap the tailshafts, also where the speedo gear is located. Drivetrain.com also has rebuild kits available with new bearings and syncros. Around 300 bucks. I local shop should be able to rebuild it for around 300-400 more. There's a massively sized nut in there that needs to be torqued around 350 ft/lbs. correct me if i'm wrong.

Heh, the car could have lasted just a tad longer before the transmission went out on me..heh. Guess I'll be driving the FC for a while. I'll probably just try to get my hands on a cheap used tranny to throw in it so I can take my time in rebuilding the original.

Oh yeah, it rebuilding the transmission something a rookie home mechanic should try to tackle? Or best to leave it to the pros?
