hesitation problems.

The last few days I've been experiancing hesitation on full acceleration. I'm not sure what might be causing it. Especially since I can't seem to pin point when it happens. But from what I've seen, it goes like this.

Only happens in mornings on my way to work. Usually happens after a hard 2-3 shift with full acceleration. The last and worst episonde followed this pattern. I have this on ramp onto a back-road type freeway. The speed limit is 55, and I've successfully managed to hit 42 before merging onto the freeway. Its fun on ramp, but is almost a 360 degree curve onto the freeway. Anyways... I'm always mashing the gas when I hit the freeway, because traffic in this 55 zone is normally traveling closer to 70+. Normally this isn't a problem either. Except for the last week or so, from time to time, I'll shift into third (If I was in 2nd behind a slow car) or I'll be in third and hit the gas. Everything is fine up until about 6500 RPM, then it hesitates for a second. Normally I can back out and just shift to fourth and have no problems. This time, I kept my foot in because I had somebody in a BIG F350 barreling down on me, and it not only hesitated but started to drop off in RPM and of course speed. I took my foot out and shifted to 4th and still got hesitation... I shifted back to third and coasted (Luckily the idiot in the tank.. err truck... switched lanes and let me be...) down to about 40 mph and put her back in 3rd and she still hesitated for a few before finally giving me power again.

Does anyone know what this could be? I initially thought my carb might need cleaning or rebuilding. But I don't want to rule out a fuel problem as well.

[Edit] Also, I'm thinking it MIGHT be a problem with a small exhaust leak that I have. Basically the seal between the manifold and the cat is not good at all, and I'm leaking exhaust there pretty bad. [/Edit]

Thanks,
Chris

The exhaust leak probably wouldn't do that.

I had this problem for a while and when I finally installed my carter fuel pump it was all good.

Fuel filter or fuel pump. In a nutshell, fuel delivery problems.

Cool, I'll replace the pump and filter before worrying about my carb then.

the sequence would be, filter first, then pump.

Eh... I'm sure my pump needs changing too. $80.00 for a carter sound about right?

Had the exact same problem and it was definitely the fuel filter for me.

And the audience says......."FUEL FILTER!!!"

Running up through the gears uses up what little fuel you have stored in the float bowls. Then, after that, you're just down to what the pump can get past the filter.....

Filters cost like $3.50 and takes five minutes to change out if you take your time.
