hesitation,bogging

Hi all and thanks for previuos suggestions.I rebuilt the carb on my new to me 79 se and it ticksover like a dream now,We replace all fuel pipes as most had dry rotted and cracked so have good fuel volume and pressure now.Only problem now is when i try to drive it,it will not speed up unless you get the revs on and slip clutch it will just hesitate, bog and struggle at low revs until it gets to about 3000 then it will pick and go and go well.We have been playing with the timing and found we have no trailing spark or if it is it is weak.Any ideas would be gratful thanks colin. My dad reckons it is the coil and i agree but could it be anything else,we have fitted new plugs, points it has a new dist allready by the looks of it.

Sounds more like you lost your leading ignition (lower plugs). Are you sure its the trailing ignition that's not working?

yea, if it was weak trailing you would hardly notice and your tach would be all whacky. i'm betting on the leading side as well.

The fact it goes well after a certain rpm indicates it's a fuel issue.

First thing is to make sure the accelerator pump works. Look down the throat of the carb and work the throttle by hand. You should see a strong squirt of fuel into the primaries. If that's ok I'd maybe be looking at a clogged transition circuit.

Are your plug wires going to the correct plugs?

recently my tach was whacky i think.. i noticed that my gauges were flippin out!! the tack bounces when do anything electrical like messing with the volume on my radio. also the voltmeter goes crazy! it might also mean that my alternator is dying? battery power surge?

Yes i have pulled the dizzy,it was fine.Plug leads all seem to be going where they should.I think tomorrow i will try a couple of spare coils i know i have a work off a rotary, and maybe some new leads.I will let you know.I did try and put dizzy in a notch or two either way but engine ran worse. If you sit stationaty and rev it up it revs fine right up to redline, with a slight flat spot around 2000,3000 revs.It backfires like crazy and loud when i let off from high revs

Hmm I have a similar problem (and I have a fuel only ECU + injectors - Still a dizzy + coils doing ignition.). I't was happening a few weeks ago when I was giving the car a run in the driveway. I would slowly bringing the revs up and around 2500ish it would just drop down and jump around.. If I revved it quickly and got revs over 3000 it would keep going up and fine, although missed every now and then. (couldnt test drive as front end crashed )

So it sounds similar to my probs.. could be timing or coil I reckon.. (my fuel system is perfect here. steady good pressure etc.)

All the best,

Paul.
