Help wery BIG backfiring problem

Ok this is what happened to me this morning going to work I get into my car this morning everything look alright I let the car warm up and leave get to the red light make a turn and then get on it not hard but to aobut 6K 1st gear all good secend still good then when I shiftedinto 3 I could not get passed 5K it would just not go like it would fall flat down on its face nothing nada so I shift up to fourth and everything seems fine but still wont go past about 5K so I dont really think much of it and keep on cruising in 5th at about 45-50mph aproching a stop light i slow down a little bit and then BANG sounded like a shotgun going off inside the car I had my music preatty loud and I heard it clearlly even heard the ocho from it then again it backfires and I see a little flash of light in my rear wiev mirror and then again and again and the last backfire was so masive than it lite up the whole road in the mist at 5:30 in the morning I thouth honestly than my car was on fire any ways is there anybody that can help my out with this issue

The simptoms are if I step on the gas to quickle when I take off it will hoke itsellf due to too much fuel and once I get to 5K in 3rd gear it wont go any further anyone have any ideas how to adjust it.

Thanks for any help in advance

Check your timing, you may have lost your leading ignition. 3rd gear "fade" is usually due to a clogged fuel filter. Any holes in your exhuast will also lead to backfiring...

mine does this too, with a holly carb, i'll pull apart my fuel filter (Aluminum hi-flow unit from Earl's mounted in my engine bay) next time I go to my Grandpa's house (where my car is stored in his barn, on a dirt floor, BOO YA!).

the way i get around "the wall" is to pump the throttle a few times, full-idle-full-idle, and it usually wakes up and takes off. give this a shot on the freeway. i havn't gotten any backfiring, except the night i flooded her while i was pissed off, took out the fuel pump fuse, cranked the hell out of the engine to dump as much fuel into the exhaust as possible, pulled the trailing plugs, cleaned them out, put them back in, she fired up and shot flames at ~11:30 at night. neighbors called the cops thinking someone got shot LOL.

I have a similar problem with my 82. Mine's a little worse, where I have a backfire in between each ****, and at first I thought it was a 3rd gear 5K problem, but as the problem 'grew', its actually this:

Even after a warm-up, the car cannot pass (usually) 50-55mph. Once you hit the problem area, the engine will essentially choke on itself and no amount of pumping the gas, or working the engine will ease the problem until it clears itself. This sometimes occurs to the point where it will not 'breathe' again until it has no load. I've found that dropping it into neutral and pumping the accelerator will sometimes help get the engine 'breathing' again. But even after the engine has regained its 'breathing' capabilities it still will not pass that cursed area.

Now, I have marked breathe each time in quotes because there are two parts to the breathing process. One is the intake: ensuring there is enough oxygen during the combustion. The second is the exhaust: ensuring the exhaust is leaving the engine and exiting completely through the exhaust pipes.

I have noticed one very weird item. When it is choking on itself, if I do a quick spin of the wheel to the right and back, it will operate properly while in the right-hand turn lean.

The one thing I've started to lean towards but am hesitant to run out and replace due to the cost of it is the catalytic converters. Has anyone had an issue with clogged cat's?

i need to tighten/replace my cap because i bumped it while un-flooding my engine and it moved WAY too much. I could move it up and down, and side to side, so next time i'm where it is stored i'll try and tighten it.
