help with sterling carb

ok here is my problem. i recently bought a sterling carb. After installing it and removing my nest. my car wouldnt idle. after solving all the vacuum leak and adjusting idle i finally got it to idle at about 900 rpm which i am fine with. It idles great. But when i hit about 3 to 4k rpm it start to bog and then picks up again. it seems like its getting too much fuel at around 5k to 7k rpm. it drives fine until you floor it. it goes through all the gears/rpm fine when you half throttle. does any one know what my problem is? would a fpr help? a wideband? new jets? if any one could help that would be awesome. and yes ive done some research. no nikki thread has been unclicked, im still not able to fix my problem

I don't know much, but recently have my own sterling idle issue. As to the rest, I'd try a stock ap nozzle just to see what it does. Then jets. How is it when you apply throttle in a linear manner?

Mechanical secondaries take some getting used to, if you are the type to just floor it then you will find them to be rough/annoying. If you really concentrate on smoothly transitioning into them then you might like them. I had mech secondaries for many years, but ultimately went back to stock because I got tired of them...

What fuel pump and regulator are you running?

Using the throttle more as a rheostat and less like an on/off switch.

Mech secondaries aren't that hard to get used to. Sounds like you might not have enough fuel getting to the carb. Did you upgrade your fuel pump? When's the last time you replaced the filter?

No I haven't upgraded the fuel pump. My car ran great before I switched to the sterling carb just got it and installed it and this problem accured. I was thinking maybe a wideband or a fpr would help . So you say I also need a upgraded pump? If. It is a. Sterling I wouldn't hve to mod the. Ac pump. Or lever right? Thanks for the replies tho.

And there it is. The Sterling is good for only a couple seconds of wide open throttle with a stock pump. Search 'carter fuel pump'. Kentetsu has a fine install thread.

Fact, youd need 2.5-4 psi of fuel pressure for the sterling and around 60+ gph. If youre looking into a good, compact pump design that flows proper GPH, try the Weber REDLINE inline pump. Ive been using one on a stockport for years, I really love it. Its quiet and only draws 4 amps.

The low PSI Holley reg will do you fine, its only around 25 bucks.

But you still will have a slight flat spot when opening the barrels since its mech secondaries. Tuning around it can be done, but I can tell you if thats a sterling, its probably as good or better than its going to get.

Yep, you need a better pump, the stocker won't handle that carb

Well the pump I linked can be had with 8mm inlet/outlet which is the factory size. its also tiny, and mounts with a single clamp that uses the same size fastener as the factory pump mounting area!

Did I mention its gerotor, and makes no noise? Lol youll come to appreciate that if you buy a rotary vane

Yeah loud pumps suck.

You'll want 8mm or 5/16 like he said to make things easy

I use a Carter 7lb pump with my Sterling. It's LOUD! Luckily so is the rest of the car, but I do wish I had bought a quieter pump. Over time I think you will learn to appreciate the mechanical secondaries. Just takes some adjusting in your pedal work.

Or do what I did, put a choke on it!

Well I kinda made my sterling myself, so its really just a modded nikki, only differences between his and mine is that I retained vac secondaries, and put a large choke plate on a milled airhorn.

Yea... well see how it goes when I put my pump and fpr. On. Ilde is still being stupid. Won't go below 1200 rpm now. I'm sure there's now leak either. Maybe a rebuild or sell it and go t2 swap.

There is a writeup in the FAQ section with lots of information on upgrading the fuel pump and adding pressure regulator. https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-arch...ey-fpr-529605/

New fuel pump fpr wideband installed feels very strong. Now I think I just have to get use to mechanical secondary. Have nowhere to.ripe on her yet. Tho but still.stumbles when secoundaries kick in. So I'm guessing I have to learn how to.drive it
