Unhappy Help Me, Whats Wrong?

Ok, i have a '85 GSL. It is a daily driven car. I have driven this car for the past 5 months with no problems at all. 2 days ago i noticed a wierd (bogging) in third gear at maby 5,000 RPM. I was worried so i drove home carefully. I looked over the engine bay and didnt see anything wrong, so i took the car out for a quick spin to see if it would do it again. I noticed nothing at all. The next day it happened again, only this time it happened in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. It tends to happen at 4,000 RPM and higher. I was thinking that possibly the fuel pump was going out but i am not sure if they do go out. Its almost as if the carb isnt getting the gas it needs. I am somewhat of a newbie to engine troubles, so, what can this be? Please help, if it is seriouse, i dont want to continue driving the car until it is fixed. Thanks for the time and help! -Tim

I think it's probably the fuel filter. It's not uncommon to have fuel-filter problems after buying a used RX-7.. in fact, many RX-7 owners will often replace the fuel filter "first thing" after they buy another RX-7. It seems to be a neglected maintenance item..

Be forewarned, it's potentially a messy job, due to the location of the filter.. to say nothing of the pressure in the fuel lines.

My car does that exact same thing, and the bogging has slowly gotten worse. I can hold the gas at like 3/4 throttle in 3rd gear, but then as soon as I floor it, it boggs out...Bad. Now tonight driving home, it actually stalled on me . Im gonna go through the fule system tomorrow, and replace the sparkplugs as well. It kinda seems like its just not firing right or something, or like rotary-rex said, not enough fuel.

Edit: also an 85 GSL

Fuel filter would be the thing to try. I don't know what else would cause such sparatic stalling.

ok, i kinda figured everyone would say the "fuel filter" so i checked it out and replaced it. Still having the problems.. I think im going to go ahead and get a new fuel pump since i am planning on getting the RB Holley setup this winter. Where can i get the 6 psi fuel pump? also, is it ok to run a 6 psi fuel pump with a nikki?? Thanks much. -Tim

have you checked for crap in the fuel lines? It is a possiblity. Just pull the line by the carb and inspect that.

so if there was a problem with the fuel lines, (filter or clogged lines) why wouldnt it bogg in first or fith gear? i think 1st would for sure do it becuase it revs up so fast, ya think that 1st would suck the most gas... also, where is the location on the fuel pump, and how is it activated? electric? where can you get a 6psi pump? napa or on-line? sorry about all the Q's. Just getting worried. -Tim

Are you having a problem with the 2ndaries opening? I have a problem with bog if I floor it sometimes. The 2ndaries don't open up and it just sputters along.

Also, check you cap and rotor. Make sure there are no cracks. Check you plugs and wires.

dont get one of the crappy metal ones get the clear glass one, you can get it at probly and auto parts store. that way you can also see if you hace crap in the filter rather than trying to see debris is the off -white stock filter... rotormotor, try some sea-foam

Ok, well I replaced my air (still had the original one, it was stamped 10/85) and fuel filter (also looked VERY original) today with the stock Fram replacements (I know, I know, Fram. Its my Dads car though ) from the auto parts store, and all my problems are gone . Just so you all know in case this happens to you...Check the damn filter .
