Help Me Please (starter Trouble)
Hey guys i really need help i bought a 79 yesterday for $500 with an extra motor, trans, lots of misc parts, oh yeah and it has a full rb exhaust, the rats nest removed, that ignition mod that uses 2nd gen plugs, adn only 91000 original miles but all of that does me absolutely no good if the mother f*%ker doesnt start i turn the key and the combined volt/tach runs up to about 12.5volts and i turn it the rest of the way and it does absolutely nothing all of my fuses are good and it will push start but i really would like the convenience of being able to use the starter any help would be appreciated as this is my first first gen (i was die hard fc) and i have to drive it daily to work so it starting would help immensely.

If the small wire that connects to a "tab" rather than a bolt is not connected, then nothing will happen. Clean all of the connections at both ends (starter and battery) and make sure the small wire is connected properly. If that does not solve the issue, then maybe the switch itself is bad. If that's the case, I would install a simple switch to activate it for starting purposes. Good luck, and keep us posted on your results.

to test the starter, take a jumper wire & clip one end to the big wire, & touch the other end to the tab where the little wire hooks up. This should cause the starter to try to start, if it engages, & tries to start, then you likely have problems with the ignition switch, if it doesn't, the the problem is with the battery, cable or the starter.
hope this helps

My bet is that the battery cables are internally corroded. These are old cars. If you haven't put new cables on, it's probably time. A solid negative ground makes a HUGE difference; especially in dealing with starter issues.
