Help with Ignition System

I've searched and tried a bunch of stuff but I really can't figure this out.

It currently seems that I can only get spark on either my leading or my trailing plugs.

If I run power *only* to the leading coil - the car starts up and runs fun.

If I run power *only* to the trailing coil - the car starts up and runs so - so.

Now I have two positive wires and two negative(ground) wires. I can hook these up in any combination of arrangements to one coil at a time and the car starts up fine.

When I try hooking up both coils at once - again I only get spark on one set of plugs.

What is going on here? Am I just missing something? Please help!

Im not sure what you're saying but it will make a difference if you connect the coils + terminals directly to the battery...

Dead tachometer.

Sorry about not being clear enough.

What I meant in the initial post is that I can get the leading plugs to make spark OR the trailing plugs. But I cannot make spark on both leading an trailing at the same time.

This seems to rule out problems with the ignitor though because if the trailiing ignitor was bad - if I had only the trailing coil hooked up the car wouldn't start right?

A car will sometimes start and idle (poorly) with only the trailing system working,,,,depends on conditition.....
It can be confusing to swap wires around to find the problem (but it can be done) however, "Dead tachometer." (if it was dead before you started swapping around) is a sure sign the trailing system is bad, as the tach is connected to the trailing coil. I have not seen it myself, but I think it has been reported that a bad tach has been a problem also.

Well I'm quite sure it's not the coil, since I have tested both. The thing that is really strange is that I can run ONLY the trailing plugs and it still runs fine. Is there a chance that somehow the leading ignitor is firing the trailing plugs?

Crossed wire, perhaps? If one of your coils is hooked up backwards, it might be the cause.

Tested the ignitors by flip-flopping method, it's for sure the trailing ignitor
