help with edelbrock thunderseries carb

HI, I am in the process of installing a 500cfm thunderseries carb (and using rb intake), however I have a couple questions/problems.

First of all I got the carb to run. (didn't adjust idle yet as it is a 1700rpm (although idle screw is as low as it will go)

However, it is leaking gas from the area behind the electric choke. THere are two small bolts/nuts that seem like I might be able to tighten-- however, the carb is brand new so I don't see why they would be loose (also I don't want to over tighten them) Also, I am pretty sure it is not leaking from the main gasket as I have those four nuts on pretty tight. I tried reducing the fuel pressure (from 6-4) but it still leaked.

Also, I have no fuel return line set up. Is this correct? If I need one how should I run it?

Also, I just blocked off the 2 vacum lines at the carb, the pcv port and the two on the distributer. Is this right or should I run a hose from the distributer nipples to the carb vacume ports?

Also, the carb makes a really loud whining sound when ideling, that goes away when you give it throttle. Is it supposed to be that loud?

Finally for connecting the electric choke do you guys know of a easy/best place to hook up the switched power wire?

Thanks, and sorry for all the questions.

I think you might be on your own with this one, it hasnt been done as much as the ubiquitous RB holley/Mikuni/Weber route

I tried playing with the carb again today. I can get it to idle but not very well. However, if I have the ports on the distributer open the idle goes up and down, same thing if I have them connected to the ported vacuum advance on the carb. Also, if I plug the ports on the distributer then the idle stops bouncing around.

I can get it to idle with the ports on the distributer pluged. However, when I give the carb throttle the rpms go down verly slowly. Why is this?

Also, I still cannot figure out what the loud whining sound is?
(I tried taking off the carb and shaking it around a bit, and the whining sound stopped for a bit when I put it back on--- however, it started once again.
(also it is not really leaking gas now that I took it off and reinstalled it)

Does anybody have any ideas as to why this is happening.
I could really use some help.

Thanks

This might not help you, but I have the OER carb and after it kind of warms up, it gets a high pitched screeching sound lol.

The edelbrock has worked flawlessly for me. First, read the manual and/or buy a book specific to the carb (or carter equivalent). Remove the top, use magnetic pliers and a magnetic screwdriver to remove the spring clips so you do not lose them. The adjust the float to spec. Sure it would be nice if they worked out of the box, but this is a massed produced product. Re-assemble and snug everything up. You should have wither a 1/2 open spacer or better yet a 4 hole with the primary divider cut out. This "must" be done or the carb will not like the intake pulses. Now put the carb back on using good intake gaskets. Your whistling may likely be a vaccuum leak which should go away if you do this right. Air fuel mixture screws are on the front, turn them all the way in and then out 1 1/2 turns (final adjustment to be made after full warm up)........Don't know what you have for a fuel pressure regulator, if stock 12a pump you're probably okay.

get a wideband it will make life EZ trust me... i know about holleys not so much about the edelbrock.. the edelbrock i have heard is much ez-er but like 84stock said you have a vac leak fix that 1st.. then we will worry about the fine tuning... i know with the holley i had to drill out the idel cerkets.. change the pump cam smaller air bleeds and amake it a open venturey like 84stock said.. you will need a spacer to have it work or mill down the inside of the rb manifold there carb works off a closed venturey

Thanks, you guys were right. I had a vacuum leak from the engine to where the intake connects (I guess I tried to do the job too fast and did not clean the old gaskets well enough).

Anyways, now I can get it to idle very smoothly. However, the lowest i can get it to idle is 1000rmp because the idle speed screw does not go any lower. I am not sure if a rod or something can be bent (like how your supposed to adjust the choke and etc.)

As far as my setup. I have a carter fuel pump and holley fuel pressure regulator.
I have the pressure set at 6psi. Also, I have an open 1inch spacer between the intake and carb and a 14inch drop base air filter.

I adjusted my secondary air valve to open easier, however I am not sure if I made it open too easy. If I give the car lots of throttle and don't have the rpms up I get a huge bog (almost seems like it is going to stall). However, this does not really happen in 1st gear.

I didn't have much time to play with it yet. However, I can see that I can also adjust the pump shot.

Do you guys think the bog is from too much of a pump shot and too much fuel at once, or not enough fuel to match how I have the secondary butterfly set up.

Thanks again
