Did you check the large vacuum hose on the back of the carb going to the intake manifold?
There is an easy and free way to check if you've blown a seal - search the forum for "compression test" and you'll learn how.
Might as well check... if the motor is still good you'll have renewed enthusiasm in diagnosing what the problem really is.

I know what it sounds like when you blow a seal. At idle, the engine shakes violently and when you floor it the car studders and coughs and slowly advances up the tach. You'd notice a major loss in power and the shifter would vibrate like mad. I should have recorded mine when the rear seal went. Oh well.
