Help clutch doesnt seem to work.
ok i got the 80 LS in solar gold. with less than 40k on it. today when i went out to start the car to goto work while the suburban and volvo are in the shop. pushed the cluch in. put it in neutral pulled choke started it up just fine. came out went to put it in reverse. grind. yes clutch was in. turn car off. went through the gears. turned it back on. clutch in. reverse. just grind. when the car is off it feels perfect going through the gears.
when you start it in first if you dont hold the brakes you go foreward.
clutch grabs really close to the floor.
never fully engages.
no grind when sittin in neutral or any gear.
HELP!!!

Yes, you can burn up a clutch in 20k or even less, if you are trying to light the tires up on a regular basis. Clutches in my cars go past 100k with no problem.

Let me rephrase this for those of you who need total clarification. Under normal driving conditions a clutch can and will last up to 100k or more. Having a clutch fail on a car that does not get driven much is not considered "Normal Driving". And yes, things wear out with low mileage due to age. As that car sat, alot of condensation takes place thruout the various components of the car. Such as brakes/oil/clutch. What tends to occur is rust will form on the pressure plate and flywheel, this generates excessive heat when the clutch does get used and wears the friction material faster. We used to see this as a very common issue among Porsche 911 owners that did not drive their vehicles. The clutch would be locked up and you would either have to tow the vehicle, dump it down in 2nd and just redline it to break it free. If that didn't fix it, then you tore it down.

I believe you. The average mileage under normal driving conditions is the topic. The low mileage hardly driven vehicle is considered severe driving conditions. Some recommendations if I could be so bold as to note are. Use synthetic oil and change every 6 months if she is not getting driven on a regular basis. When you do drive her, make sure you take it on the freeway and get the engine up to full operating temp. Flush the brake fluid out every 18 months.
