Exclamation HELP! BRAKES = pain in the ***

okay so im doing rotors and pads (front)on my 83 gsl and the caliper came off with ease and the top bolt for the caliper mounting bracket. but the bottom is blocked by the balljoint assembly i read in the haynes manual that u just pry it out of the way....

well it aint budging im sure that works on a brand new car but not on mine...all frustration aside im sure im just not prying on it right where do i need to do this? the photo doesnt really show any thing..

or is there another way to get the rotor off? i tried hammering on the top bracket to swing it out of the way but i dont think itll go far enough and i dont want to break **** so any input would reallly help me out alot..this is bout to take longer than pulling my damn motor at this point lol.

search, its a pretty common prob.

for mine i just cut the lip off the bottom piece with an angle grinder, so i could get a normal wrench in there, also iirc you can do it with an offset wrench or something to that effect

once you do get the bolt out, cut it down to be just a tad shorter. will make it much easier next time.

DO NOT CUT THE FLANGE.... it weakens the whole structure.. they built it that way for a reason.. its very simple to get that bolt.. you unbolt the 2 bolts at the bottom of the strut housing and rotate the spindle out of the way. it gives you pleanty of room. or you can use an offset wrench but please for the love of god dont grind the flange off.. unless you want some problems later.

Anytime you have to get the grinder out for a routine maintenance job, you should probably reconsider your role as a "mechanic", and pay someone to do it properly.

alright people to get that bolt off ... you only need to unbolt the one bolt thats under the caliper braket and not both of them. The best way to get that thing off (better than an impact wrench) is take a wrench, lay flat on the ground and give that thing the biggest kick you've got ... trust me it works everytime ... then go to the next one and go as if you're going to undo it the whole sturt assembly will move and will give you enough clearance to get it out ... another tip is if you ever try to take those clips that hold your brake lines, tap them from the side and those things will come right out without any lubricant ... trust me I'm a Canadian guy and I know a thing or 2 about rust
