I didn't think there was an axle retaining clip, its just the bearing collar that holds it
in there. You may be able to get away with just getting new bearings pressed on
to fix it.

83 was a magic year for swapping. The rear driveshaft flanged changed, so you have
to make sure the driveshaft you have will work with the other rear end. Otherwise
folks do these kinds of swaps all the time.

ok so if the rear end is 83 or older? it will bolt in correct? and the housing is slightly bent on the one on the car thats why my freinds were thinking jut get a whole new one and if its not a 83 say its a 84 or 85 what parts would i need to change out etc?

Grab a rear from a GSL, and get the driveshaft for it too. Your driveshaft may work, if you want to check it out, but otherwise just grab the other driveshaft that goes with the new rear.

This swap will get you disc brakes, and a limited slip rear. Well worth the effort. You can usually find one for a couple hundred bucks.

Be careful with the brake line thread sizes , I think they were changed in 1983 as well. I seem to remember my rubber jumper line(s) to the rigid lines on my 83 did not fit the 81 rear end I put in and had to modify those also.
