hello :) new member

hey whats up, my name is ryan, or ops, either one works just fine

just bought a 79 rx7 a week or so ago, was a happy owner till i found out it had a bad alternator, kinds pissed me off seeing as i asked the previous owner of any major problems, and all he named off was one of the lights motors was out, to me, a bad alternator is a semi serious problem, depending on how many days youd like to drive it for ;x

ran for 2 days, broke down, bought a new battery cuz this one was completely gone, it runs find without it, could use a tune up, and have a new alternator on order

hopefully thats the only major engine problem ';D

but the more i read about this car, the more i love it O_O

thats all i can really think of at the moment, ive had a few drinks, so my heads not quite in the right place, ill post pictures later

(dont expect anything special, i bought it for 500$)

well, you see, there inlies the problem itself, i just REALLY hope its only the alternator, and that the coolent, oil, and "Gen" light all lit up, is just caused by me hitting that speedbump too hard ;x

heh, guess well find out,

once i get the alternator up in it, im gunna run it up to AAA and get a full diagnostic right quick, luckily everyone i know is into working on cars, and some with certifications but dunno how much they know about rotary ;x this should be fun

Heya! Welcome to the forums...I got my 1980 SA for 850...yeah...i paid a bit more...but the car had no problems whatsoever...except the runs really rich and I can't figure out why my trailing ignitor isn't sparking well. In any case my turbo swap will take care of it, so i'm not wasting money on fixing that.

IN any case, welcome and enjoy our car. Just like they said, ''even if it's not running, you can still wake up 3 in the morning just to watch it sleep in your driveway...''

7's are beautiful cars...you'll grow to love them more and more everyday to teh point of obsession...

Wassup Ops. Don't feel too bad, you have a running car! lol.

Where did you get your 7? I got mine from a small used car dealership downtown for about the same price you paid, and I had to tow it home

Welcome to the forums man, let us know what you do with yo ride.

Be sure to connect the negative battery cable last, positive last can cause problems.

Welcome to the forum.

Steve.

In San Jose you should be able to get an alternator at the junkyard for $15. Personally, I prefer a JY alt to a rebuilt because I've had too many rebuilts fail over the years. When all the warning lights come on and the engine still runs it means your alt isn't working; might be a broken belt..

how can you tell what model of rx7 you have? when i had to get insurance, they asked me what type it was, i said i didnt know, so they gave me whichever one was less insurance a month

was funny when she asked me how many cylinders, i kinda paused for a minute, and thought about it, i go "well.. i guess none, cuz its rotary" "i dont know what rotary means" "::sigh:: 3, it has 3."

well my friend works at jiffy lube, so i bought a new battery, and drove it over there, they ran a small diagnostics, and the results basicly said that everything was fine, but a dead alternator, and i just ordered a new mitsubishi alternator from kragens, was only 30$ or so
