Heh sort of surprising track results...

Took my new (to me ) '85 GSL (5 speed) to the track tonight. I previously had an '88 RX-7 (NA, 5 speed) with a cone air filter, straight pipe to stock y and mufflers, full suspension, a fresh clutch, and beef tires that netted a 10.71 in the 1/8 mile drag. Now, my 85 GSL has stock EVERYTHING except a straight pipe to a better muffler, and it ran a 10.81 ! The 88 would launch real hard and felt real strong, but after one botched launch spinning most of the way through first, I actually got the 10.81 on only my second run! This car is surprising!

The 2nd gen direct fire ignition is a really nice mod for 20 bucks. Smooths idle, slightly better gas mileage, and if you go with the transistor trick you'll get some added hp too.

That's actually my main reasoning for even swapping out for a 1st gen

FBII, my best time slip reads a reaction time of .26, a 60 ft time of 2.35, and a 10.81 at 64.49 mph. By the way, your the inspiration for my Turbo project

Hey at least you guys have IRS! It is a lot easier to to weight reductions than a IRS swap onto a first gen!

do you have a limited slip rear end? if so you should be able to get those 60ft's down to atleast a 2.0 which will atleast bring you equal to your old fc and thanks for the comment, i'll post some updated pics and news of my setup here soon.

That would be awesome FBII, 'cause I actually had some questions about it, but I will wait for you to list your updates and all, I'm sure your real busy with it. Oh yeah, it does have the stock LSD, so maybe I should just try and concentrate on getting my reaction times down some more (although it's come along way! First try was a 1.5! ).

what are you launching at? and what tires are on there? what we like to do here is "pre-load" the suspension... when you stage and the second yellow light comes on hold your e-brake up keeping your thumb pressed and get your rpms up to around 3500 - 4000. now let your clutch out till right when it's starting to load up. (this will put force thru the rear end a little and should make your car "squat" prevent you from smoken them up). when the last yellow light goes off pull back on your clutch foot. by the time you let off; the green light will be coming on. to get a great reaction time you have to predict the light. what i just explained to you may sound like alot, but when you get the hang of it you will be coming out of the hole with less wheel spin and faster reaction times. plus, if you get up and stage before the other guy it will give you more time.. just keep racing the riced out civics.. they almost always go over the line and have to back up.

Indeed Greg, she is surprising me more and more! I'm glad you and your dad are enjoying the FC, and that's cool that you are still checking out the 1st gen forums like you said you would Like I said, stay tuned for updates! I might even drive over to Jackson when it's all done and give you guys a closer look at it, since you guys are the only ones that would get the true before and after of it

Thanks for the advice FBII. I knew when to drop the clutch, and found what RPM I liked to launch at, but I completely forgot about preloading the suspension I'll give it a shot next time!

d0n't drop the clutch, slip it a BIT. it reduces the chance you'll spin the tires...

what tire pressure were you using in the rear?

I actually kept it at 32 psi I was working on getting a better time with just improving my driving each time, and it was working (first run was 10.98, second was 10.89, and last was 10.81). I try my best to just keep everything stock. All the runs were made with a jack, the spare tire, and my toolset.
