Have you been talking to Kurt Robertson? He told me to stick my hand in the fan too....
It's funny you mention the rental house/pitbull relationship! I thought of you when I was trying to rent it because I knew/thought you were looking for a place closer to town than F.G., but I rented it shortly thereafter. I figured someone as passionate about their dogs as you would be a good renter; pitbulls or not.

I don't know Kurt, but I figured I could at least check the fan operation by feeling how much resistance it had. I was able to stop it with my finger acting like a baseball card in a kid's bike spokes. Easy and no harm done to the ol' nose picker. I then remembered your response to my previous thread about this same problem about how to check the fan. It seems to check out with that test, but should I be able to stop it with my finger?

Anyway, after driving around on Sunday it seems to be cooling fine and level. No smoking from the manifold either! (yet)

Jinxed - I'm hoping to be available to make it to Albany on 6/20, but we'll see what the "boss" says. Where are you all meeting in P-town to make the drive down?

We met at Lloyd center theaters last time. this time I think we should all meet up at Lloyd center, but at the top of the parking structure. so we can make all kinds of noise with lots of echo's.

aside from living so far out of town. I do like my landlords. He's an old Asian man who has been in to rotaries for awhile. His son raced in SCCA with a 87 Turbo. I've been a rotary admirer for some time. now I have one. So we get along. I do hate my neighbors though.... and forest grove/Washington county. I also really wish I had a garage. Then all the other BS wouldn't bother me so much.

I wouldn't of rented your place. My younger pit is a handful. Eats anything and everything, and barks (he's getting a bark collar asap). He's getting better. but I already have to re carpet this place due to him eating gorilla glue dead center of the living room. I'm a good renter though because I won't just move out and leave the carpet screwed up. Or anything for that mater. I also am very avid about making sure rent is on time. Only was late once and it was because our checking account was garnished 1200 dollars (leaving us 200 in the hole) after the check was sent. But since I'm on good terms with them, I just called them to let them know what had happened. I came up with the money in the same week. Other than the gorilla glue only my stuff had been chewed. My older dog is well behaved though. Must skip a generation.... I think spawn might be mildly retarded.

I thought you may know Kurt because he is a teacher also. jack of all trades he is. Teacher, mechanic, welding inspector, minister.

BTW. If you need any help working on your car shoot me a pm. I'm fairly good at working on cars. I've got a seven that had a hard life. I'm also fairly ruff on it. So I spend a lot of time working on it. It's not an SE but I'm more knowledgeable about FI than carbs.

How does the car seem to be running? Any issues with loss of power or anything?

Have you checked the timing? If the timing were retarded, then it could cause the motor and exhaust to heat up more than usual...

Fan clutch.

The fan is really on for spinning at idle to ensure enough airflow goes through the radiator and oil cooler (below the rad on an SE). When driving at highway speeds, the front end gets enough air that the fan clutch freewheels.

When the fan clutch goes out, you'll notice that the longer it sits at idle, the more the engine temp will rise over time.

New fan clutch should fix your problem, or go electric fan and free up some HP right on the eccentric shaft where it matters most.

I've been running with no fan for a few months now. I just stay moving. and if I have to sit I just turn her off for a minute. I pay close attention to the temp gauge.

jinxed - Thanks for the offer of help with the car. I might take you up on it sometime. I'm hoping for Albany.

Kentetsu - car's running good. no more heating up (yet) and I'd like to check the timing, etc. Thanks.

Boyee - yeah, I'd like an e-fan but i'm not too savvy with that stuff. I've read alot of threads about it and would like to do it/have it done someday. Maybe jinxed will help me!

Yeah for sure. I need to get one in mine too. So I'll have first hand experience soon. Shouldn't be too hard. I'm probably not going to go with the thermostat method. I'd rather just use a toggle and do it manually. That way its there when I need it not when I don't. And less to go wrong with out me knowing. that way the only relay I have is the switch. Its more work, but so is a manual choke, and a manual tranny. But most of all we all know toggle switches are kinda sexy in there own little way.

I've got a timing light, If you don't have one. I'll be down in Portland Tuesday. I keep it with me at all times.

On a side note. I think I'm well above 100 db now. Worlds loudest fart can (RB header, no cats, stock tubing to huge muffler). I paid 50 dollars for the header, and 15 for the gasket the fart can is from my old lancer so free. (came with the car). I'm saving for a real exhaust. I really can't floor it anymore cops here me coming. 65 dollars and maybe 5 HP over stock.

update

An update - Tried and failed to get a rad from mazdatrix. Went to local rad shop (Mac's) and ordered what I thought was going to be a plastic tank rad even though I didn't want a plastic tank. It was all I could afford. The rad came regular metal tank and installed beautifully. New hoses, stat, etc. Pretty fun and easy.

Anyhow, I know I already mentioned all this stuff in a previous post but wanted to restate it here. I've been driving a lot more lately and she runs flawlessly. No heating up, no leaks, smoke, etc. So I appreciate the posts and glad it wasn't a manifold or seal or something horrible. My next project is going to be to install an e-fan. I can't seem to find a thread that details what Taurus e-fan works or what aftermarket fan works (if there is one). What year Taurus fan do I need to look for or is there a better aftermarket fan that would bolt on cleaner/work better? Does the pulley for the clutch fan need to come off, etc. I've got ?s. Is there a thread that lays it all out for me? Thanks.
