there is no heater on the engine. you would be removing you heater core and blower motor and that would be utterly useless. this would not save enough weight to make a difference, nor would you throw the engine's balance off by any means. now, you may be talking about the a/c compressor. in that case, just remove it and take the belt off. it wont harm the engine in any way. then you can remove the condensor and evaporator and all of the lines. again not really saving that much weight. good luck with what you are trying to accomplish.

I removed all my AC workings since it was inoperable anyway - and it totaled up to a whopping 40lbs! There is another member who has just done the same, and even posted pics of his weight on the scale at 160lbs, then holding the AC components at 200lbs... another verified 40lbs in weight. I'd say that's a considerable weight savings, since every 100lbs is worth a .10 in the 1/4 mile. If you remove the rats nest with smog pump, you'll get another 20lbs +/-, which is getting you really close to that 100lbs .10 time/weight savings.

I'm glad you answered your own question so quickly. Unless you want to attempt an air cooled rotary, then by all means just remove that pesky water pump. Hey you could even remove that stupid carbuerator, I mean what good is it anyway? And those triangle shaped things inside the engine block, who needs em?

You know I'm just playing with you, but also trying to stress that yes, the water pump IS essential.

And about the AC I would defenitely say thats a huge weight savings. People spend hundreds of dollars to get carbon fiber or fiberglass hoods to shave a fraction of that of their car's weight. Removing weight from a car is the BEST way to improve performance in my book. It helps everything, fuel efficiency, acceleration, lateral handling, braking, etc.

It worries me when people start modding thier cars and don't know what the basic components are or what thier function is. Do we need an 'Auto Mechanics 101'. or 'Engines for Dummies" section on the forum?

the only way i could justify removing the water pump is if you madea block off plate and you installed an electric water pump, but you would have to do some research on a pump that is very reliabe and isnt going to fail on you when you need it!

I think the heater core was like 8 lbs, and the center control thing was another 6lbs...I dont know if you want to take the dash out and deal with all that for less then 15lbs on a street car. Besides wouldn't the heater come in hand if the car starts to overheat?

I bought a Holley setup a few years ago for a 12A, it came with an electric motor to replace the water pump belt. No brackets, no instructions, nothing, just another part to sit on a shelf and collect dust.

Somedays it amazes me what people think they can remove for weight savings with no regard for safety or durability, let alone even have the car run.

Glad you you took my poke in good humor. We can't be serious all the time.

As a side note, there are air cooled rotarys, but they are small, snowmobiles, weedeaters, motorcycles, model airplane engines and the like.
