Heat Shielding?
I'm in the middle of rebuilding an 82 gsl, and now that I have all of the heat shielding off of the bottom of the car I was wondering if I really need to put it back on? I have a straight through exhaust, so there aren't any hot cats to worry about. i'm thinking about just retaining the shields around the fuel tank.
This might sound like a stupid idea to some people, but i've never seen and hot rod builder make custom heat shielding on hot rods with 500+ hp.
Also, it is rusty and looks like ***, and I could save some weight.
Is there anyone who has a daily driver without any heat shielding on the exhaust?
Matt

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
There's been a "discussion" about this recently.
Keep the stuff around the tank, don't worry about the rest. Dead, useless weight.
Besides, it's on the passenger side, and who cares about those freeloaders, anyway? A little chestnut roasting never did anybody any wrong.

10-4 good buddy, rip all that **** off without the kitties in place.. when i got mine the cats would glow (they were plugged), but now there isnt an issue, but keep the heat shield around the muffler, because gas tanks like fire.

mine not only collected junk, it rubbed on the exaust pipe, making a neat buzzing noise.
..well, neat if you're a sadistic dentist with a 130HP Wankel powered tooth file and a lineup of fat, chocolate sucking children at your office.

I took ALL the shields off of both my 7s when I put on the RB header-to tail systems. Have duel all the way on one. No problems yet. I wouldn't recommend parking in dry, tall grass though.

Thanks for doing the experimentation for me guys! I'm going to throw that junk out. I'll post some pictures of my car when it's completed this spring. And you know the less crap that gets bolted back on the sooner it will be done!
