Headligth conversion question...
I was checking out some rides on cardomain and I came across an 84 RX-7 with the headligth conversion kit of a Miata...
I called the company that makes the kit and they told me that the kit is for Miatas and that they never tested it on the RX-7... obviosly it fits the RX-7 because someone did it but have anyone here done it? it is a bolt on or does the kit requires modification to fit the RX-7 since it was designed for Miatas?
here is the link; http://www.cardomain.com/ride/451551
thanks...

i have a conversion kit on my 85 gs
it was orinally for a 69 chevy pickup but that project fell through, and i tried them on the rx7.
the fit is almost perfect the bulbs are just a hair smaller that the stock rx7s but they do fit tight and i havent had any problems with them.
i dont remember how much they cost but the kit included a 100w wire harness bulbs and lights for pretty cheap

Except for shots of it before all the work was done,Ive still never seen pics of that car with the Miata lights down.
I tried the same thing years ago with a BrainStorm Miata light kit.......it was a nightmare that didnt end until the kit was totally butchered and still didnt work. The hinges are different, the linkage is different, the shape is different. On top of all that, the lights themselves sucked and werent DOT legal to boot.
I ended up propping it up for a while, then dumping the entire mess in the garbage due to inadequate light output.I went back to stock until the widebody and repaint was done.I then installed/modded, a now un-availible, MidTennMiata flush light kit.It was much easier to adapt, since it had no moving parts, and it was much easier to switch out the shitty lights they include, for some DOT legal Hella 90MM projectors.

I had a miata and the alternative light options for 1st gens on those comes up all the time on miata.net. It was there that I first gained my lack of interest in those types of lights simply because, well most all of them suck. THE BEST alternative to HID is the CIBIE and HELLA H4 conversions, to which I have seen nothing come close. I had the CIBIEs and when driving next to ANY car, the miata light overpowered all other lights anywhere near it. Those little dual kits and the non-popup kits just suck. The lights on a miata stick up way further in the driver's view compared to our 7s so light mods are big for them.
On a side note, that is one nice looking 7, except for those lights.

You read my mind in regards to the Miata lights.
Also,I have CIBI lights on my Samurai, and yes they are awesome as stock replacements.
Its almost always a matter of form over function when people install those kits.Looking cool isnt worth the reduced light output and increased danger of running inferior headlights. Why these companies charge hundreds of dollors for their kits, then include CHEAP,inferior universal running/fog lights as primary headlights....is beyond me.If they are installed with DOT approved, proper lighting, there is nothing wrong with them, except possibly, vertical placement of the light in relation to the car,and the optics of the lids when running flush lights.
Ill admit that my lids are probably not 100% perfect optically, for my setup. But the Hella projector lights with OSRAM H9 bulbs, put out so much light,in such a concentrated pattern that it still completely eclipses the cheap junk that came with them, and the Miata popups I tried before. For anyone considering a dual popup or flush kit for any car, just remember that NOTHING replaces good lights. If you can afford HID (In a proper reflector housing) then go for it.If not,be sure to run good,DOT lights on your setup, because its likely that what they provide with the kit,is going to be pure crap.
