Headlights wont go back down!!

i just got my rx7 yesterday, and i was putting the interior back together (the console area) and i found the headlight switch, i put everything together, and hooked up a battery... and the headlights come up... good

bad: i hit the switch for them to come down, but they dont, i realize that i never connected the connectors to the car's harness... so i do that, and still nothing.

do i have to hold the switch or something like that?

btw: the car has no motor... so if it has to do with that harness, that would explain it.

there are three possibilitys to your dillema,

1. the rocker switch is triggered

2. the headlight switch is on

3. the fusible link that runs the retractors is blown

or worse case senario..... your motors are shot

I doubt it's the motors - both motors at once going up, but not down, would be rare. Since the motors rotate the same direction to go up/down, if they go up, it's likely an electrical issue that prevents them from rotating again to bring them down.

I've been playing with my 84SE for the past 2 weeks trying to get them to go *UP*, so if you find out what it is, please reply back.

Also, be aware that there are fusible links on the drivers shock tower in the front, and also 2 for the headlights and combo switch under the ignition switch area. HTH,

Check the fuse box. I've done that a coupe of times were I was messing with the wiring and I blew a fuse. They wouldn't go down...replace the fuse and they go down.

Ok...Let me break this down for a WORKING car.

Column swith in the off position, and the light up/down switch off: Headlights down, running lights off

Column swith in the running light position, and the light up/down switch off: Headlights are down, running lights on.

Column swith in the headlight position, and the light up/down switch off: Headlights up and on, running lights on.

Column swith in the off position, and the light up/down switch on: Headlights up, but off, running lights off

Column swith in the running light position, and the light up/down switch on: Headlights up, but off, running lights on.

Column swith in the head light position, and the light up/down switch on: Headlights up and on, running lights on.

I hope that might help rather than confuse.

To try and fix your problem, I found out that if you have a blown fuse, your lights will go up, but not down. Also, if the light up/down switch is unplugged, the lights will only go up as well. A few nights ago, I was playing around in my 83 GSL in the center console, and when I unplugged that switch and turned on the headlights (with the column switch), they went up and came on. But then when I turned them off, they stayed up, but turned off. Until, I plugged that up/down switch back in. Then they went down all by themselves . Thats as much as I know. Hope it helps.

I have this problem. I have a short on my interior lights/running lights circuit. The lights won't go back down until I replace that fuse. But the second I remove it or blow it by turning on the interior lights, they automatically pop back up. Safety feature I'm assuming. But the down feature is on that circuit. My headlights and stuff work fine though. On and off by the switch as normal.

Hope that helps some.

Hmm, must be a common problem. My '82 GSL, the combo switch works in getting the lights to come on, flip up but the console switch is broke so they will not go back down after that, but will turn off. To get the lights to go back down I pop out the rocker part of the console switch, take out the trusty Gerber pliers and short out the two tabs. Headlights go down BTW, make sure you're all the way in the car and not grounding yourself on anything as you will get a tingling sensation if you're grounded somewhere

I don't know if this helps or not, but, if the switch for your headlight washers (on the dash) is in the ON position, your lights will not go down. Even if the switch (on the column) is in the OFF position.

TJ was right days ago. It's the main rocker switch. Fix it or jump it and they will go down.

i'm sure he was right, but not in my case... i just had the headlight switch on and didnt know it, i've NEVER seen a headlight switch on the right side of the column... EVER

that sort of threw me, i hit it by accident and heard something, and looked out the windsheld and the headlights were down... viola, now hitting the rocker switch makes them go up... amazing right?
